“Nobody move! Stay on the ground!”

Fuck. We’re so fucking close and we get snuck up on. How did we let this happen? We’re smarter than this!

I shift my head to look at Mckenna. She’s terrified. Our eyes meet and I feel an intense urge to get up and protect her. She’s important, I keep hearing in my head over and over again.

But I can hear the footsteps of several people approaching us. I have no choice but to assume they’re all holding loaded guns. One wrong move and we’re all dead.

Two thick legs step between Mckenna and I, mostly blocking my view of her. Through the gap between the legs, I can see Mckenna look up with fear still painted on her face. I can also hear her breathing turn rapid.

Does she know this man? She’s more afraid than I’ve ever seen her. What does see know about him? God, are we fucked?

“Hello Mckenna.” It’s the same voice that told us to get on the ground. The man reaches down and grabs Mckenna by the back of her shirt. He yanks her roughly to her feet.

My fingers dig into the dirt with rage. How dare he touch her like that? I finally look up at this burly man, and everything becomes so much worse.

He’s handsome. Every urge I have to tear him away from her only multiplies. I need to save her from this man. I have to protect her.

This man’s eyes lustfully look Mckenna up and down. He tightens his grip on the back of her shirt as Mckenna fruitlessly slams her fists into his burly chest. I can see her lips moving but I hear none of it, there is too much blood rushing to my ears.

I hate that he is making me jealous right now, but I can’t deny that’s what I’m feeling. My head isn’t thinking straight. It’s taking all my strength to not instinctively shift right now.

Instead, I just scream, “GET YOUR FUCKING HANDS OFF HER!”

The man simply looks down at me and laughs. Laughs? Who the fuck is this guy? I hear the other men pointing guns at us laugh with him.

With one hand still on Mckenna, the man points his gun directly at me, “Shut up!” He kicks me in the side, I grunt and Mckenna screams. “Never tell me what I can and can’t do with my own wife.”

Wife…Wife?WIFE?

Who’s his wife? Mckenna? That can’t be right. She would’ve told me. We… She can’t be married. But why would he lie? Why isn’t she immediately denying it? Oh god, it’s true.

The man continues to laugh. The rage boils inside me. The first chance I get, I’m tearing this asshole limb from limb. I look up past him to Mckenna.

Her eyes are watering. “Mace, it’s not what you think, he’s-”

“SHUT UP!” he yells at her.

“I asked you Mckenna-” The rage in me is only growing with now outlet. “I asked you if you had anything else to tell me and you said ‘no.’ You lied! This is a pretty fucking big-”

“I wasn’t sure how to tell you. I wasn’t sure if it’d even ever come up.”

“Hold on…” the man chimes in. He looks back and forth between us for a moment. Then, with a mixture of anger and fascination in his voice he says, “You… and… him? Are you fucking kidding… We’ll talk about this in the car.”

The man starts dragging Mckenna away to a fleet of cars that have pulled up. I watch them as they go. My eyes meet Mckenna’s, she looks at me and mouths ‘I’m sorry.”

As they pass where Jax and Natalie are laying on the ground, Natalie starts to stand up. “No, Natalie, don’t get up!” Jax tries to hold her down but she shakes free of her hold.

None of the men with guns trained on us even flinch. The man holding Mckenna even smirks. Natalie smiles back at him. You’ve got to be fucking kidding me, how did we fall for this again?

“Natalie?” Jax looks up at her with confusion. “What’re you doing?”

Jax is like a brother to me. But my god, how the hell is it taking him this long to see what’s happening. He must’ve truly fallen in love with her to still be in denial.

Natalie walks over to the man holding Mckenna. He puts his gun away and pulls out a thick wad of cash, handing it to Natalie. She takes it gratefully.

“Natalie… Why?” It’s heartbreaking to see Jax like this.

She counts her money, not even looking down at him. “Sorry, Jax, a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do. I was on Insignys’ side the whole time. I just needed trick you into letting me tag along so their scouting team could find you easier.”
