“No. You know everything I know now. Well, except the codes. But don’t worry about that, I’ll put them in for you.”
I want him to reach for me, I want to see some evidence that he wants to touch me. I’m desperate to reach for his hand, but I don’t know if he’s going to pull away from my touch. I don’t think I could stand it if he did.
I slide just a bit closer to him and he doesn’t move away. He keeps looking into my eyes as if he’s looking for the truth, as if he doesn’t know if he should trust me or not.
“I swear, Mace, I’ve told you everything. I wouldn’t lie to you.”
His lips curve in a brief, small smile. I can’t help it, I smile too. I really wouldn’t lie to him—not now, anyway.
“I’m just trying to get an idea of how determined you are,” he says. “We kind of fell into this whole being a team thing. I don’t know how many surprises I can take.”
He turns from me and looks out the window and the sharp lines of his face seem a perfect echo of the savage land that spreads out before us. He is the same—wild, beautiful, and sometimes deadly.
“What are you really asking?” I whisper, still unable to raise my voice. My heart is pounding so hard I can feel it in my skull. My hands feel cold, even though sweat is starting to trickle down my sides.
Mace looks at me again, and his face is very firm. It sends a bolt of fear straight through me.
If I give him an answer he doesn’t like, is he going to eat me?
Might be better not to think about that.
“What I am asking is, do you really want to take your father down?”
The words hit me in the chest like a physical blow. Tears prick at my eyes, but I shake my head, forcing them away. All my frustration, confusion and anxiety collide inside me and when I look up into his face I am more serious than I have ever been in my life.
“No, Mace. I don’t want to take my father down,” I say, my voice finally clear. I see a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes as I pause for a breath.
“I don’t want to take him down,” I repeat, in a forceful tone. “I want to fucking kill him!”

MACE
Her words surprise me, but not that much. Satisfaction and relief spread through me as I realize that I am safe with her, and we share a common goal.
I really believe that she wouldn’t lie to me again. It’s all written in her beautiful dark brown eyes. The streaks of gold that enchant me so much are like roadmaps to her soul. All I need to do is follow them, and I’ll find the truth.
Her face is set, tension showing in every line of her body. It must be difficult to admit you want your own father dead. It might be worse to accept he’s enough of a monster to deserve that.
“I’m cool with that,” I say, softly. I can’t stop the smile that comes to my face then. The animal in me has been awakened by the very thought of fighting and death. The desire to hunt my enemy and tear him to shreds with my teeth and claws is primal, and it rushes through me before I can try to stop it.
There is no better feeling than giving into my instincts. I let the thirst for violence surge in my blood, even though I have to tell my beast that it can’t come out now.
Why not? It whispers back. There are other primal urges that can be satisfied.
As I look into Mckenna’s eyes, I know that she can feel it too. The magnetism between us is undeniable. It’s so strong it seems to reach to my very bones.
But do I want to be so entangled with her? We have been forced together for now, but what if she doesn’t actually feel anything for me? The animal within would not take it well if we claimed her as our own and didn’t get to keep her.
What is one more taste,it whispers. Can you really resist her?
No. I can't. I’ve never felt like this before, but I know, I’ve got to throw my heart out into this great abyss of uncertainty and just hope she catches it.
When I lean forward to kiss her she practically leaps towards me and I know, she’s been fighting this just as hard as I have. I can tell by the way she’s trembling that she needs this—she needs me—maybe even more than I need her.
When our lips touch a moan slips out of her throat that sounds like music to me. As my tongue begins to explore her mouth I bring my hands up to her shoulders, caressing her neck with my fingertips. She moans through the kiss and it sets a raging fire loose in my blood.
I push her back onto the bed and roll on top of her, feeling my wolf taking over. My hands are all over her, squeezing her breasts, grabbing at her hips and tugging on her clothes. All I can hear are Mckenna’s moans and gasps as she writhes under me, urging me on.
