He flinches. “I was fighting withyou. Just because you’re the Alpha doesn’t mean you can’t take on two wolves at the same time.”
“Are you sure about that? Every time I had to save your ass I had to fight three shifters at a time.”
He narrows his eyes. “Look, I know you’re upset right now, but you need to calm down.”
No, no, yeah. He’s right. I can’t be lashing out at my clansmen. This isn't me.
Yes, I don’t trust Mckenna fully yet. She’s part of the organization that hurts my people even though she’s not directly in it. She can betray us at any given moment.
But there’s something in my gut that tells me I need to protect her. My wolf instincts haven’t pushed me towards any other woman but her. There’s something about her I still can’t explain.
I take a deep breath. “I’m sorry. I was out of line.”
He smiles. “It's fine. I get it. I’d be upset too.”
He looks lovingly over at Natalie who’s not even paying attention. She’s staring down at the ground, hands on her hips. Curious, we walk towards her.
“Natalie, what’s wrong? Did Mckenna drop something?” Jax asks.
She points at the sand. “Do those look familiar to you?”
Jax looks down. “They left their tracks behind.”
“Great, let’s get going.”
Without another word, Jax and I shift. He puts Natalie on his back. It’s faster and easier in our wolf forms. Our senses are heightened and we ran three times faster.
The tracks leads us to their reservation. The exact place though, isn’t the main house. It’s one of their secret compounds. The hair on my back stands up.
Jax and I shift back.
“What now?” he whispers.
“Why are you whispering?” I ask in a whisper.
“You don’t know if they’re in their wolf forms. They’ll hear us all the way out here.”
“Oh, right, right.”
Jax is coming in strong today. If it were any other day, this conversation would be in reverse. I’m still worked up about them taking Mckenna.
“Let’s round the perimeter,” I say.
We rub sand on ourselves to deter their scent. We move closer and hide behind a clump of cacti. There’s no movement aside from shifters coming in and out to look around. We need to get inside as soon as possible.
The entrance is no good. They have five shifters guarding it. We walk towards the back of the building. The part where it’s more subterranean.
Our eyes scan every movement. Every flicker of the lights from outside. Our ears twitch with every sound. No matter the animal.
“I can’t see anything. They barely have any windows,” Natalie says.
“What if we shift to sniff her out, Mace?”
“They’ll detect our presence in no time.”
I motion for them to follow me further. The compound’s not big enough for us not to find something. She has to be somewhere in there unless they have taken her to another location. Those fuckers are more than capable of that.
I look behind us in case of an ambush. Then Jax nudges my shoulder. There’s a grave look in his eye. He doesn’t say anything.
