Rafe perked up when he felt they were a fair distance away from both the wolves and PEACE agents. “Are you okay?”
“Huh?”
Rafe stopped running, then placed Layla down in the corner of a dark alleyway. She immediately crumbled to the ground. Rafe held her shoulders so she would not crumble completely.
“Layla, what happened?”
“We just wanted to have a fun night. That’s ok.”
She was clearly in shock.Fuck.
Rafe rubbed her shoulders. He rarely dealt with people so intimately. Comforting people wasn’t exactly second nature to him. But he knew she needed it before he was able to extract any information from her.
“You’re safe now Layla. I’m going to protect you.”
“He was a wolf.” She whispered. “His teeth looked like fucking knives.”
Rafe smiled, then returned to rubbing her shoulders with a serious look of conviction.
“Yes,. They both were. They must have somehow found out about the letter.”
Her eyes had been fixed behind him, but now, in the semi-pitch black, they moved to him. “How would they have known that? It just happened yesterday!”
Rafe shook his head. “I don’t know yet. But I’m thinking this is considerably higher up than I previously estimated.”
“Higher up?” Layla inquired.
It was good that she was asking questions. That meant that she was coming out of her shock.
“The Lycan Legacy is a pack of wolf tribes in the Southern California region. I’m a member of the Lycan Legacy.”
“So are you part of this…revolution?” Layla asked.
“No, because each tribe does their own thing and is only loosely affiliated with the Legacy. It’s not really like Draconis Fire, for example.”
“Draconis what?”
“You really don’t know your metahuman organizations, do you?” Rafe asked with a chuckle.
“Until today, I didn’t really have my life affected much by abbies,” Layla said.
“Hey,” Rafe interjected. “You don’t need to be shitty about it.”
“I’m sorry,” Layla said, her cheeks turning red. “I didn’t mean it that way. It’s just how people talk, you know?”
“Metahuman is fine,” Rafe said. “Supernatural is fine too. I just don’t like being called an ‘abnormal’ or an ‘abbie’ any more than I’d call you a cunt.”
“Fine, I get it,” Layla said. “I’m sorry. Anyways, tell me more about the Lycan Legacy.”
The wolves that I report to are a part of the Lycan Legacy. They are some of the oldest wolves around. We call them The Elders. I’m thinking that there is some decent amongst them which is leaking into our world.”
He wouldn’t tell her the entire truth just yet. Too much information could be dangerous.
Layla blinked, then tried standing up. Rafe guided her to her feet.
“Is my sister involved in this?”
Rafe shook his head again. “I have no idea. But some PEACE agents swarmed me just before the wolves got to you. That definitely can’t be a coincidence.”
