“He’s a former SEAL. Head of our security. I trusted him to keep you safe until you could get home.”
“Do you really think they’ll do something to me? What if they were just trying to intimidate you? I’m not important to them.”
“I hope so, but I can’t take that chance.”
“Which is why Nolan was just as weird as you’ve been to me.”
“Weird how?”
Shit.I can’t tell Trey that Nolan brushed off my sexual advances. “He didn’t say much.”
“I’ve never heard him have much of a conversation with you before.”
Shitshitshit.“Yeah. He’s not flirty like Ryder. Still seemed kinda weird is all. Not very friendly.”
Not as friendly as he usually is when we’re alone.
“I didn’t ask him to be your friend. I asked him to look out for you.”
“Well, he did. I was safe. I am safe.” I move over to Trey and give him a hug. “I’ll be careful. Promise. I don’t have much of a life outside of the lab anyway. I won’t leave my apartment until I have to go to work in the morning, and I promise not to open the door to strangers.”
“I won’t stop worrying about you until—”
“I love you too, bro.” I kiss his cheek and pat his chest, knowing how much he hates affection. “Want to stay for dinner? I have a lasagna in the freezer that Stouffer’s made special for me.”
On special occasions when we had frozen dinners instead of rice and hot dogs, I used to joke about our meals being specially made for us.
Trey rubs my head like he used to when he finally grew taller than me. “Sounds good, kid.”
CHAPTER EIGHT
It’s been a week sinceI set up cameras outside of Avery’s apartment building, and not a single unidentified person has attempted to even look at the main entrance.
“Still nothing?” Trey asks before I step fully into his office.
“All’s quiet on the western front.” I open the mini fridge next to Trey’s desk and take out two beers, offering him one.
