Bingo. “How sweet that you two foil each other. I’m happy you found your people.”

“My people?” Trey stands and tosses some bills down on the table.

“Friends. We all need friends.”

“You miss the friends you left in NOLO?”

“They’re super fun to hang out with, but I’m ready to move in a different direction now. They came up and visited when I first moved here. We’ve kind of lost touch. Busy lifestyles and all. For now, my focus is on my job and reconnecting with you.”

He walks me to the T station and scowls. “You sure you don’t want me to call a car service? Or we can walk back to the casino, and I can drive you home.”

“Do you have a real car yet or just a motorcycle?”

“No need for a real car in the city. But yeah. I got a car.”

“Do I even want to know what kind?”

“It’s not a big deal.”

“Nicer than my twenty-year-old clunker?”

“A little.”

I don’t prod or comment on Nolan’s sleek car or his buttery leather soft seats.

“I enjoy taking the T. It’s fun and easy to navigate.”

“Stay off it at night.”

“I’ve got my mace.” I pat my purse.

“Be careful. Even during the day. Call me anytime.”

“Love you too.” I lift on my toes and kiss his cheek. “See you around.”

I head down the stairs to the train and try to contain my smile. Nolan’s the good boy. The nice guy.

Yet nothing he did to my body last week was anything a nice boy would do. For some reason, this makes me extra giddy inside.

Which is dangerous. I don’t have time for giddiness or emotions or feelings.

I don’t have space in my life right now for anything more than... sex.

Wild and crazy sex is all I can accept right now, whether the boy-next-door can handle that is too soon to tell.

And if he’s not? That’s something I’ll have to worry about later.
