“Maybe. Probably.”
“Hurry the fuck up.” He hangs up and I pocket my phone.
“Let’s go.”
“I can’t believe you told my brother I was here.”
“I told you I didn’t want to lie to him. Besides, there’s nothing going on. He asked me to get some stuff. I got it. Now I’m taking you home, as he asked me to do as well.”
“What kind ofstuffdid you get?” She eyes me curiously as I help her strap on her helmet. “It better not be drugs. My brother hates them. I any of you—”
“It’s not. We have a zero-tolerance policy in our casino for our guests, employees, and ourselves.”
When her shoulders relax, I give them a gentle squeeze. “It’s security stuff. Cameras that need to be installed.” I unzip the duffle bag and show her the array of equipment.
Again. All truth. What she doesn’t and won’t know is that I’ll be sneaking into her apartment tonight to install it at her place. That’s after I spend the next however many hours staking out her apartment until she’s asleep.
It’s going to be a long night, especially after turning down her invitation for sex after I drop her off at her front door.
CHAPTER SEVEN
“Seriously, Trey. What’sgoing on? This is the second time you called me today, and I haven’t even had my lunch break.”
“I’m not allowed to check in on my sister?”
He texted me twice the day I moved to Boston and dropped by the following morning. Other than that, it’s been random texts from my brother throughout the weeks. I have a feeling my brother is about to bust my ass for sleeping with his friend.
I make sure I have my badge and grab my coffee, heading outside to face the lecture I’m sure to get.
“Miss me already? I can pencil you in for once-a-week dinner dates unless that interferes with your social life.”
“Are you outside?”
“Yeah. Taking a walk around the block while I talk with my favorite brother.”
“Go back in the building, Avery.”
