“If you miss my cynicism, I can work on that. More smirking and rolling of eyes. Noted.”

He chuckles, burying his nose in my tangled hair. “I like all the versions of you. But if this is how you are when you’re happy, then I want this Lark every day.”

I turn over, and we kiss, our bodies intertwining, skin against skin. But before things can escalate, Danny pulls back reluctantly. “Cliff and my roommates are having a get-together at the Pink House today. You up for going?”

“Like a date?”

“Sure. You want to go on a date with me?”

I shrug. “If Aiden’s cooking, I’m there.”

Danny purses his lips and tries to look annoyed, but he’s hiding a smile. “I’ll tell Cliff we’re in.” He grabs his phone and unlocks the screen.

Then he frowns. A real one.

“What is it?”

He wipes a hand over his mouth. “Rex Easton wrote me. Cliff’s dad, from Bennett Security. They have news.”

My pulse speeds up. “Did they find Travis?”

“No, not yet. But a possible lead.”

After our trip to Solvang, Danny updated Bennett Security about the possible connection between Travis and me. The company has been helping us search for more clues, since we’ve got almost nothing to go on.

“What did they find?” I ask.

“Rex wanted to share it with us in person. He’ll be at the Pink House today if you’re up for that.”

“Of course I am. We have to.”

Danny turns to study me. “There’s always a choice. We could just sayfuck itand do something else instead. Go on a real date.” He sets his phone aside and rolls on top of me. “I want to take you out. Show the whole world you’re mine.”

I like the thought that he wants to show everyone we’re together. That he’s proud to be with me. It makes my chest feel light, like my heart is ready to float away. Even though, way down underneath, I’m scared to death about what Rex Easton will tell us.

And I’m scared about people following us. Leaving threatening notes…or worse.

“If we go to the Pink House, you can show Aiden Shelborne I’m yours while we’re there. Since you’resojealous of him.”

Danny growls. “The man was feeding you from his fingers!”

“He was just fishing for compliments about his food.”

Danny makes a grumbling sound in his throat. “Complement his food all you want. But if anybody’s going to be feeding you, it’s me.”

His cock is thickening against my thigh. I press my leg to his erection. “You could feed me something else right now,” I say. “Then we go talk to Rex this afternoon. And save our date for later.”

“Sounds like a plan.” He lowers his weight onto me, capturing my mouth with his.

* * *

Danny drivesus to the Pink House, and we head straight to the backyard. Aiden is over by the grill, wearing a shirt this time, while fragrant smoke billows around him. Quinn dashes over as soon as she spots us.

“So you decided to give this guy a shot,” she says to me. “How nice for him.” She gives me a hug and Danny a playful punch on the arm. Quinn knows all about me and Danny already, so she’s just giving him shit in front of their other roommates.

“It’s a trial run,” I say.

Danny puts his arm around my shoulders and kisses my temple. “She makes me look good though, doesn’t she?”
