She took a step closer to Chad, but paused by the kettle and threw it a suspicious look. “Hours ago, you say?”

“Yeah … you said you found the killer?”

She stepped away from the kettle, and Chad took a shaky breath.

“We.We all investigated, and have found him. That includes you.”

“Not anymore—”

“What did she say to change your mind?”

“Who?”

Ally clacked her tongue. “The therapist.”

“It’s not for me, being a detective—”

“She said that.”

Chad backed up a step. “We came to that conclusion.”

“It’s the wrong conclusion. Now get dressed.”

Ally tugged him out of the kitchen and only released him when he was by the stairs.

He peeled her hands from his t-shirt. “Okay, I’ll come. Just … wait in the car.”

“I’m not moving from this spot.”

He held up his hands to her. “Stay put.”

Chad ran up the stairs and climbed into his detective suit in record time. He checked the window, but couldn’t see Romeo lingering outside.

“Chad!”

“I’m ready.”

He walked from the house in a daze, knowing Romeo would watch him leave. Romeo would think Chad had turned his back on him again, and picked the detective.

Had he?

“We’ve wasted enough time.” Ally yelled.

He didn’t have time to close the car door or slip on his seatbelt before Ally was tearing down the track road leaving Romeo behind in the shadows.

Chapter Fourteen

Chad flexed his hand on his knee. He stared at it, pulsing as fast as his heart. “I don’t think I can do this.”

Ally huffed. “Yesterday is yesterday. I told the DI you weren’t feeling well. He was pissed until I told him you collapsed.”

“You didn’t tell him about what else happened?”

“No, and Carter and Val aren’t gonna tell a soul either.”

“Why are you doing this?”

“I like you—”
