“Before what?”
“I call the police, ask to speak to your DI.”
“Why would you do that?”
“You’ve obviously flipped.”
Chad nodded, moving behind a desk. He took a seat, staring at Carter who gawped, still clutching his phone.
“I think you’re right.” Chad admitted.
Carter breathed out what sounded like ‘crazy’ and tapped his thumb on his phone screen.
“While you’re at it, you can tell my DI about the bodies in the woods.”
Carter’s face sunk, and he met Chad’s gaze. “What?”
“You heard what I said.” Chad gestured to the chair in front of the desk. “Now take a seat.”
Chapter Nineteen
Carter didn’t move, and the shock on his face didn’t fade. Chad scrunched and relaxed his hand under the table, praying he hadn’t just made a huge mistake. The rain beat down harder on the roof of the outhouse, drowning out the buzz of the lights.
“Bodies … what the hell are you talking about?”
“That military base. I took a look.”
Carter stepped away, shooting accusing looks at all the furniture. “I have no idea what you’re on about. I don’t know of any military base.”
“You drive your sports cars along the road next to it, and sometimes you go inside. You park behind that brick building in the trees.”
“I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.” Carter raised his eyebrow at Chad and when he didn’t respond, he snorted, pressing his phone to his ear.
“You’ve lost it. You need help.”
Chad’s stomach flipped and flopped. “There’s tire marks on the road.”
“Tire marks?”
“It’s been so hot lately, but months ago it wouldn’t stop raining. There’s tire marks behind the gate and next to the building.”
“That doesn’t mean I’ve been in there.” Carter looked around the building again. “They could be from anyone’s cars.”
“They could be, but they also might match the tire tread on your Jaguar.”
“You know nothing about tires or cars.”
“Not a great deal, but I’m a detective. I put pieces of evidence together.”
“You’ll lose your job for this.”
Carter rocked back on his heels, keeping his phone pressed to his ear.
“We both know you’re not calling anyone right now.”
“I probably don’t need to.” He sidestepped along the aisle and peered behind one of the closets. “Surely all your detective friends are here, ready to ambush me, and once they come out of hiding, we can sort this out and I expect an apology from all of you…”
“There’s no detectives or police here, other than me.”
