“How many have you got?”
“Garages or cars?”
“Both.”
Carter smirked. “Four double garages, eight very expensive cars. I think I’m addicted.”
“Addiction and obsession go hand in hand.”
“Then I admit I’m obsessed. Supercars are what I live for.”
“Not saving lives?”
“That’s my job. I’m Doctor Carter at work, and—”
“Clive the car enthusiast at home.”
“Exactly.”
Carter pulled up beside the house and lowered his window. He tilted his head left and right, taking in the house. The rain beat a steady rhythm against the car, distorting the outside world.
“Is your boyfriend in?”
“Boyfriend?”
Carter twisted in his seat. “The one that got a bit too eagerly handed with you.”
Chad couldn’t see where Carter was looking, but his throat throbbed. “No. Not yet.”
“You gonna get that gas?”
“Yeah, sorry,” Chad unclipped his belt. He looked at the handle, but didn’t pull it. “While we’re here, we might as well get a coffee.”
“Thanks, Chad, but it’s been a long day.”
“I insist.”
“Really, I’m okay.”
Chad leaned forward, clasping his gaze on Carter’s keys still in the ignition. It gleamed, providing him with a way to get Carter out of the car.
“That’s a strange keyring.”
Carter reached for his keys. “Oh this…”
He shut off the engine and pulled them out for Chad to see.
“Limited edition 18k Bentley key ring. Only hundred in the world, each has a serial number.” Carter turned it over for Chad to see the number and code on the back. “I got a good deal … this and my shades, only $4000. Bargain.”
Chad held his hand out, and Carter clutched his keys before releasing them in Chad’s palm. He curled his fingers around them, Carter’s attention didn’t leave his hand for a second.
“You can really feel the weight of it, can’t you?” Carter whispered. “How rare, how exclusive.”
Chad grinned as he nodded, then flung open the car door.
“What are you doing?”
“Now you have to have a coffee.”
