“I know but…”

“But what?”

He shrugged.

Val spotted them heading down the corridor. Her gaze followed the body bag before snapping up to Ally. Her mouth opened, poised to ask, but before she spoke, Carter appeared from a corridor. He went straight to her, ignoring Ally and Chad and Andrew being taken to the mortuary.

“It’s here,” he said.

Val nodded, and scarpered down the corridor.

“And so is the kidney killer.” Ally said.

Carter whirled around, and startled when he realized he’d blocked the trolley’s path. He stepped aside, and let Andrew be wheeled out of sight.

“He jumped before we caught him.” Ally said.

“He’s the fatality on high rise bridge. I heard about it.”

“Yeah. We found our man, but he found the tarmac.”

Carter grimaced. “You didn’t get to speak to him?”

“Well, Chad did, briefly, but he didn’t give much of an insight. He was after revenge and he got it. Case closed.”

“Case closed.” Carter whispered.

Sweat beaded on his brow, and he tugged the surgical mask hanging around the neck.

“Well, at least I know we won’t be getting any more inappropriate packages terrifying my staff.”

Chad tilted his head, studying Carter. “You seem nervous.”

“I am,” he whispered, dabbing his brow.

“Why?”

Carter’s eyes darted all over the place, and he rocked forward and back on his heels. Chad bristled, his heart kickstarted into overdrive and he approached Carter.

Val reappeared, slipping in front of Chad. “Marcy’s almost ready for you.”

Chad gawped over her head at Carter before his face filled with heat and he looked away.

“Shit.” Ally said, backing away and pulling Chad’s arm to take him with her. “We’re keeping you.”

“It’s okay—”

“No, it’s not, you’ve got to go in there and do your thing.”

Carter attempted a smile, but it fell flat. “Now the moment’s finally here, it’s just as terrifying as when I thought it would never come.”

“Everyone’s behind you.” Ally said.

“Everyone seems to believe it’s a done deal.”

“All you can do is do your best.” Chad echoed from their meeting on the road.

Carter’s eyes crinkled with amusement.
