“Yes.”
Another inmate approached and leaned on the wall a few meters away from Maddox.
“At his flat?”
“No.
“At work?”
“Yes.”
“There’s been no one suspicious, Boss. He’s not mentioned anything. A police officer came in a few days ago, but that was to speak to me.”
Maddox tracked empty space. He wanted to ask why and what was said, but he didn’t want to give anything away.
Carl seemed to understand his silence and started speaking. “Some Sergeant Dover, he showed me some CCTV of my car driving towards Ashdown Forest, but don’t worry, I had it covered.”
Maddox curled his hand around the phone at Sergeant Dover’s name.
“Something about Sergeant Dover was off, he—”
“Yes,” Maddox interrupted.
“You’ve met him?”
“Yes.”
Carl huffed. “He’s a dodgy copper.”
“Exactly.”
“Okay, someone got close to Jake in Stationery Corner?”
“Yes.”
“On Monday, when you changed your plea?”
“Yes.”
“This guy, you think he’s the boss, or another of his crew?”
Maddox rolled his eyes. “Yes or no…”
“Shit, sorry, do you think he’s calling the shots?”
“Yes.”
“Their main man.”
“Yes.”
Carl breathed down the line. “Okay, let me think…”
“Around 15:00.”
“I can’t remember, but Sam’s got CCTV. I’ll find out who it was.”
“Yes.”
