I pick up speed as I retrace my steps, searching for that broken window, that makeshift portal to freedom.

"The director," she hiccoughs. "He's making Dani take my place."

I don't know what she's talking about, but I also can't stop and ask for clarification. I need to focus everything I have on getting us out of here and then on going back to get our beta.

"Shhh," I say again, but it does nothing to soothe her. She twists in my arms, but I don't let her go. Eventually she settles, clinging tight to my chest as I deliver her to the outside.

"Go to Kieran in the woods," I say, infusing every drop of my alpha command into the order.

Sin nods and stumbles away, allowing me to return to my mission unfettered.

SIN

I have Levi's gun.

He was so busy trying to shush me that he didn't even feel me slip it from the holster on his side, but now I have it, and it's mine.

I'm not going to find Kieran in the woods, even if that would be the smart thing to do.

I will not rest until Dani is safe in my arms again. I thumb the safety so I'll be ready to shoot at a moment's notice. That may be all I get, and then I step through the broken window.

No, I don't look back.

There is no going back, only striding forward with confidence, power, aggression.

I will find my girl and then we'll reunite with the guys. We'll be together as a pack, and fucking nobody is going to separate us ever again.

I try every door I find on my path. Most knobs are locked, the rooms on the other side silent. If I keep trying, I will find her.

The next door I try pushes open, and I stumble into a large warehouse filled with boxes and metal cases. I remember this place from before. It's full of good places to hide, should Dani and I need one later.

I resist the urge to rummage through the storage bins in search of more ammunition. The odds of finding a match for the weapon in my hand are slim and will cost me precious time. I have no idea how many bullets rest within my weapon, andI worry that attempting to count them could be a big mistake. What if I can't figure out how to reassemble the handgun properly? What if I ruin everything?

No, I will carry on blind.

At least this time I have the light.

I pass through the warehouse and emerge into another long hallway. I take a series of turns until I find the same glass door that led to my freedom last time.

No, this is wrong.

They'll have Dani on the other side, the one where I lived. So I retrace my steps, find the warehouse again and emerge from the other side.

My steps are quick, hurried.

My heart beats a staccato. Dani, Dani, Dani. She is my only thought, my only destination.

So when a door flies open behind me, I turn ready to either greet my love or kill my enemy.

The sharp tang of ink and old leather assaults my senses. Before me stands a man holding a frail, genderless person. My eyes dart between the two faces until at last I recognize Jax behind those thick glasses. The final member of my pack.

I lower my gun and run to him, choking on yet another sob. "Jax, it's you!"

"Sin. Oh, thank God. I was able to hotwire the door to the lab. Don't ask for details, but we don't have—"

"Cindy. Is that you, Cindy?" the strange human-like creature in his arms rasps, interrupting our reunion.

I glance down toward the face, but it's not one I recognize. The voice is female, I think. Whoever this is, Jax has deemed her worthy of rescue, and I need to respect that.
