She may not be part of our pack, but she’s still our responsibility. We were the ones who took her from what she knew and forced her into our world as a fugitive.
She’s scared out of her mind.
And when prey is scared, it runs.
I follow a safe distance behind her. She leaves an obvious trail, one that’s easy to follow. I could reveal myself to her now, tell her why she needs to come back to the safe house, tell her that I can keep Kieran away if his presence unnerves her.
But she needs this time to herself. If she wants to run, she can run. And I will follow behind, just in case. Once again I’m the one with feet on the ground, ready to fight should something go wrong. That is my job as the protector.
When she sleeps, I sleep.
When she moves, I move.
And when she holes up in a small cave tucked into the side of the mountain, I fall back several hundred yards, hiding myself among the trees.
I see the two men as they approach with a comm in hand. The equipment looks like something straight out of Jax’s lab. They’ve tracked her here, I realize.
And if they’ve tracked her here, they’ll be able to find her anywhere. But why didn’t they come before? Or did they arrive at our carefully selected safe house and decide to wait for a different opportunity? It doesn't make any sense. They could have had her by now. Why wait?
Whatever the case, they’re here now and will need to be dealt with. First I’ll take out the men, then we’ll find whatever tracker they've embedded in Sin and get it out of her.
Damn it, why did Jax have to leave when he’s the only one who really understands this shit?
I inch closer, remaining quiet, stealthy, as the men stumble closer to Sin’s hiding spot. And watch in terror as she surges forward in a brave attempt at outrunning them.
One of them grabs her in his arms. He’s rough with her, which pisses me off. I want to bash his fucking skull in, but I’ll only get one shot and I want to make sure it’s fatal.
I hear their vile words as they tell Sin she owes them her body. It pisses me off even more, but it’s also a good thing. Theyaren’t calling in their find. The OA doesn’t know they’ve got her, and I can use that to my advantage.
One of them shoves his pants to the ground and leers at my girl, cock in hand.
And I’ve officially had enough of this shitshow.
I dart forward, line up my shot, and take that fucker down with a bullet between the eyes. The other one whips around, grabs Sin and holds her in front of him like a shield. Fucking coward.
“I’ll give you the omega. Just don’t shoot,” he pleads, licking his lips and searching for me in the trees with frantic, crazy eyes.
But I’m well hidden, and I’m also a damn good shot.
He attempts to back deeper into the cave, but the bullet tears from my gun and rips into his skull before he even has a chance to see it coming.
Sin falls to the ground, gasping for air, and I hurry toward her. "It's okay. It's me. Levi," I murmur, stooping down to help bring her to her feet.
She falls into my arms with deep, wracking sobs. "They were going to… They almost…" She can't finish a single thought. Her mind must be reeling, the poor thing.
I sink another bullet into each of the thugs to ensure they’re dead, more for Sin than for myself. She flinches as the snap of each shot rents the air, then relaxes into me once more.
"Are you angry?" she asks, her lower lip trembling as she looks up at me.
"At them, yes. But I feel better now that they're dead."
"No," she corrects softly. "A-at m-m-me."
I take a step back and put a hand on each of her shoulders so that she can watch my face as I speak. "You were afraid, so you ran. That's something I understand very well. It's why I followed you. To let you have your time. I needed you to be safe, but I also needed you to be okay, if that makes sense."
She nods slowly, still sizing me up, no doubt. "Are you going to take me back to the pack?"
"Only if you want me to," I answer, reaching a hand toward her cheek to wipe away a tear. God, I love the feel of her under my fingertips. I want more of this. Want it forever.
