“You’re not okay,” Fitz said, moving close.

“I will be,” Tanner said. “Just give me a minute.”

Silence fell between them. Tanner sat on the floor under the window and drew in long, cleansing breaths.

“Are you having second thoughts about this?”

Tanner met Fitz’s stare. “No! Why would I have second thoughts?”

Fitz shrugged and it was then that Tanner saw his alpha’s vulnerability… him.

A smile played over his lips. “No second thoughts. Not even close. You’re not getting rid of me so easily, Fitz Walker.”

Fitz smiled before sitting down beside Tanner. “So what is it? Need to eat? Drink?”

A wave of heat washed over Tanner, and a moan bubbled up his throat.Oh dear gods…

“I know you went offScentex… but yourHeatextoo?”

Tanner shook his head. “I’m taking it… I swear…”

Fitz frowned. “We already had a contact heat a couple of weeks ago…ifthat’s what that was.”

Tanner closed his eyes. “Itisgetting towards a point where I should cycle off soon, but barely. It’s no wild heat, either. I don’t know what this is.”

“It’s definitely some form of heat,” Fitz said before growling and nuzzling Tanner’s neck. Tanner writhed against his alpha’s hard cock against his leg, the need mounting.

Fitz drew Tanner into his arms. “A perfect storm? Years of beingsoclose and not truly being able to actually connect—coupled with nearing the limit on your meds?”

“Who knows?” Tanner murmured before licking his lips. “All I do know is I need… Fitz… Ineed.”

“Are you sure we’re ready for what that might lead to?”

“Do you not want to have children with me, Fitz?”

Fitz dragged him even closer before snuggling between Tanner’s thighs. “Of course I do! I want abig, rambunctious family. Lots of kids…”

“Define lots?” Tanner asked, looking worried. “Because I rule out eight right now.”

“Five?”

Tanner cringed.

“Oh, come on! It was great growing up with a bunch of brothers. You said you wished you’d grown up that way.”

“You’re not the one who has to carry them,” Tanner said. “Or give birth.”

Fitz hugged him. “You’re right. I’ll be happy with whatever family we end up with… as long as it’s with you, my omega.”

Tanner pulled away slightly. “I got the feeling you didn’t want children.”

Fitz frowned. “Whatever gave you that idea?”

“You didn’t want me to talk grandchildren with your papa… and then you said we had nothing to worry about, as far as knocking me up.”

Fitz kissed him softly. “After I hurt you… I assumed you wouldn’t be in a rush to have my children. And I would never force you into something you weren’t ready for. I was trying to protect you.”

“The past is the past…”
