“Reminds me of you,” Quinn’s grandfather murmured and drew Fitz out of his own head. “He looksjustlike you did when you were born.” He grinned. “Just what this family needs. Another strong McCreary alpha to help lead us on in the next generation.”
“CarterMcCreary. He carries two families into the next generation,” Quinn said, smiling at Bellamy’s parents.
“On that note,” Bellamy’s papa said, slinking over. “I haven’t had a turn yet.”
His grandpapa took over and lifted little Carter into his arms. “My gods, he’s beautiful.”
Bellamy’s father rose and stood looking over his omega’s shoulder. “Our first grandbaby.” He looked to Quinn. “Hopefully there’s more to come.”
“If I can convince your son, yes,” Quinn answered.
“I’mnotgoing through this again any time soon,” Bellamy murmured weakly from the bed, his eyes opening slightly.
Quinn rose from the couch and slid into the bed beside his omega. Bellamy snuggled in close, resting his head on Quinn’s shoulder. The pair whispered back and forth, smiles and love on their faces. Love for one another. It was the final nail in the coffin, and Fitz felt rather glad he’d come and witnessed it, no matter how much it hurt.
The babe let out a wail.
“Sounds hungry to me,” Bellamy’s papa said, bringing baby Carter to the bed.
Bellamy adjusted himself a little and pulled open the hospital gown before taking their son into his arms. “Here goes nothing.”
Fitz turned away, giving Bellamy some privacy. His stare went to Tanner’s again. This time, the omega was watching him.
Closely.
His gut clenched again. He opened his mouth, words bubbling up his throat without any idea what was going to rush out.
“So which one of you is next?” Quinn’s grandfather asked, turning to Tanner and Beau.
“Not it!” Tanner cried before jumping up. He eyed Fitz oddly, and then left the room.
Fitz followed the omega out into the hallway, pulled like a dog on an invisible leash. From the moment he’d first laid eyes on Tanner McCreary three years before, he’d felt like they were two like ends of a magnet, constantly repelling one another. Somehow, the magnets had suddenly grown weaker and they were left in this weird place between loathing and… and… he didn’t know what. “Tanner?”
Tanner froze in the middle of the hall and spun to face him. There was an expectant look on his face. The omega didn’t say a word, only stood there staring.
“I know you’re angry with me…”
Tanner’s eyes narrowed. “Over?”
Awkward silence filled in around them. “For not showing up that night.”
Tanner chuckled.
“What’s so funny?” Fitz asked, the anger coming back to him.
“I spent the night with Quinn and Bellamy. We were up late cleaning up the party, so I wasn’t home.”
Fitz clenched his teeth. “You had no plans of being there, did you?”
“Nope,” Tanner answered. “But then, seems like I really had no reason to be home, did I?”
They stood there in the hallway, glaring at one another.
“I came,” Fitz said. “I just couldn’t bring myself to knock on the door. Guess it was a good thing, hmm? We were never meant to be anyway.”
Tanner’s smile faded, and he hated that he’d caused it.
Fitz fought the urge to step closer and drag the omega near.
