“We don’thaveto be strangers,” the omega cooed while writhing in his lap, grinding into his cock in the worst way. “Guess what I’m thinkingriiiightnow?”
“I don’t know…” The heated anger spread through him as he gazed down at the omega. An anger like he’d never felt before. He frowned.Do I know this guy?Fitz gave the omega a look over, but didn’t see anything that said he knew the dude. “And I don’t care.”
As soon as the words were out of his mouth, he regretted them. It wasn’t like him to be overtly rude, even if the guy was invading his space. But he’d had a shitty day and a lusty, handsy omega was thelastthing he needed in that moment.
“You don’t care?” the omega asked, authentically looking and sounding hurt. “You’re supposed to care, godsdamn it. It’s supposed to be magical!”
Another omega suddenly intervened and pulled the one in his lap away. “Don’t mind him. He’s been celebrating a little too much. He just turned twenty-one… and not normally like this.”
The drunken omega yanked himself away, flopping back into Fitz’s lap. Fitz scowled, the second thud hurting more than the first. The anger within flared even brighter, and he pushed the omega out of his lap with a thrust of both hands.
“Woah!” Harrison cried.
A little more roughly than he’d intended. The omega stumbled and fell to his knees, missing the arms of his friend. The omega turned to stare, wide-eyed, at Fitz.
The bar went quiet.
Even the song that had been on the jukebox stopped at that very moment.
Everyone was looking at them, whispering.
For a split second, Fitz felt terrible. He never roughed up omegas, and today wasn’t the day to start it, bad mood or not.
“Help him up,” Harrison whispered hotly under his breath.
Quickly rising, Fitz reached out a hand to help the omega up. The pair of eyes that had stared up at him with disappointment now glittered with an anger that looked like it matched whatever was bubbling within him.
His hand was ignored. The omega reached for his friend instead—who glared almost as much as the wild one did.
“I’m sorry,” Fitz said under his breath before shoving the hand he’d offered through his hair. “I didn’t mean to push so hard.”
“Why did you push at all?” the guy’s friend asked, lifting a brow.
Why?Fitz didn’t have an answer for that. At least not one he could say and not look like an even bigger asshole. But then, no matter what he said in that moment, he would be the asshole. He glanced at the green-haired alien. “You okay?”
“Don’t bother pretending you give a shit,” the omega spat before spinning and stalking toward the door. His friend gave one last glare before turning to follow.
Fitz watched as the two omegas made their way to the door. The sensation of anger went with them—leaving him feeling empty and hollow for some reason. Fitz took in a deep, cleansing breath and let out a long, slow exhale. He sighed with relief as soon as they were out of sight but then saw some of the looks he got from other patrons. Omegas were prized… and protected. An alpha abusing one? It wasn’t acceptable behavior.
He offered a meager wave before sitting back down and sinking low into his chair. After a moment, everyone stopped staring and went about their business.
“Whatthe fuckwas that, little brother?” Harrison snarled lowly.
“I don’t know!” Fitz said, wide-eyed. He glanced again at the door, almost fearful they’d come back. The odd sensation still lingered a little… like he’d been marked by it. “I got thisweirdvibe.”
“Oh come on, Fitz—youcould’vegiven that omega a birthday kiss. Maybe your day would’ve changed for the better,” Emerson said before winking and lifting his bottle of beer to his lips, taking a swig. “Maybe a fun little fuckbuddy for the night would’ve changed your whole tune. I think your friend would’ve been more than willing.”
His gut clenched, and the intensity of the anger he felt around the omega returned slightly. No, that guydefinitelywasn’t for him. “Yeah, as if I need to add misery to my madness right now,” Fitz said. “No thanks.”
“You didn’t need to take your anger out on that omega,” Harrison murmured, ever the moral compass. “And you sure as hell didn’t need to put hands on him.”
Fitz shook his head. “I didn’tmeanto.” He frowned. “I just got thismassivesurge of rage the second he dropped in my lap. It was weird. And then he wouldn’t let go. I was only trying to put some distance between us… and I went too far.” Fitz sighed, shaking his head. “Today’s just getting shittier and shittier by the second.”
Harrison eyed him. “Look… if Captain Tremaine is beingthatmuch of a dick, talk to the chief. You’re unhappy… apparently enough that you’re taking it out on innocent bystanders. You need to nip that shit in the bud, man.”
“The way that omega was wiggling his ass into Fitz’s lap, I don’t know if I’d use the wordinnocent,” Emerson said.
“Be nice,” Harrison snapped before turning to Fitz. “You can come work on my team. I need a couple more on rotation. It would be better to get someone with experience versus some noob out of the fire academy.”
