“I plan on being here a long, long time.”
“Good,” Wilder said. “I’m rather selfish in that way. I won’t let you go.”
Jamie tried not to notice Wilder glancing away and dabbing at his eye. He hated the worry in his brother’s eyes when they looked his way. He hated what he was putting everyone through, especially Rohan and Wilder.
“I have some good news of my own.”
Wilder lifted his stare, a soft smile on his face. “What’s that?”
“After some discussions, Rohan has agreed to us seeking out a surrogate. We have a prospect willing to meet Rohan. I met him and didn’t scare him off.”
His brother was quiet.
“Please don’t tell me you also don’t approve of this. I’ve heard enough from papa.”
“Rohan told me a little about it. It’s not that I don’t approve of you and Rohan involving a surrogate. I believe you should, if you both wish to have a child. But do you really think this is something you want to tackle? I mean right now… your focus should be on your own health. Maybe after you’re better would be time to think about that family.”
“Ineedthis,” Jamie whispered. “A baby, Wild. A brand-new life. An innocent babe at the start of a new adventure. Our new adventuretogether.”
Wilder’s stare washed over his face. “I understand that… I just don’t want you to sacrificeyourneeds for this. Rohan’s worried, too.”
“I know. He’s spoken about his fears with me.”
“Then why now? Why not a few months from now, once you get some strength back and good news from your doctors?”
Jamie smiled softly at his brother. “Because tomorrow’s never promised to us, Wild. If not cancer, it could be a trolley accident, or a fall, or any number of accidents. I don’t want to wait. I want to live today, not tomorrow.” Jamie sighed. “And it could take months to find the right surrogate… and more months to finally get pregnant. And then the pregnancy itself… it will likely be a few years before we actually become parents.”
Wilder held his gaze for a few seconds. “Okay. You’re obviously set on this. If it’s truly what you want, then you have my support.”
Jamie placed his hand on Wilder’s. “Thank you.” He leaned his head back on the recliner and smiled at his brother. “Any idea what’s on the menu for this party of yours? I’ve been craving some of papa’s pâté for weeks now.”
“I’ll have to make sure it’s on the menu, then,” Wilder said with a tilt of his head.
“I wonder why papa hasn’t called me to invite us already? He’s probably still upset with me about the surrogate.”
“He’s likely just worried about you.”
Jamie shook his head. “I fear papa is more worried about what others will say. As it is, I’mbarren—which has apparently just about ruined the family.”
“Fuck other people,” Wilder said. “I don’t care what they think. And I hate that word. Never say it again in my presence.”
Jamie smiled. “But it’s true.”
Wilder glared down at him. “Promise me.”
Jamie sighed. “Fine. I promise.” He paused. “Still doesn’t make it less true.”
“When I think of something barren, I think of something cold, unfeeling, and empty. You have more love in your pinky than most people have in their whole bodies. You’re not barren. Nowhere close.” Wilder squeezed his hand and smiled. “You’realive. That’s the important part.” Again, Jamie saw the same worry filling Wilder’s eyes, and he had to look away from it. He had to focus on healing himself and needed those around him to be as sure as he was that he would survive.
“Remission, Wild. Remission. It’s only a breath away.”
Chapter Seven
An hour later…
Rohan walked through the nearly empty clinic and found Jamie napping in the oversized recliner. Wilder held his brother’s hand and stared at the IV drip. The look on Wild’s face—the love the alpha had for his brother—it made Rohan freeze in place.
Early on in their relationship, Rohan had almost been jealous of the friendship Wild and Jamie had. Over the years, he’d eventually realized they had latched on to one another as a means of self-protection. Of course, he was sure the pair didn’t see it that way. They loved their parents, even when it bit them in the ass.
