“Didn’t want to wake you,” Adam muttered.

“Go get in the shower. I’ll call your dad and let him know we’re going to be a little late. And I can drive you in.”

Adam sighed. “I’ll just get another Uber. No reason we should both be late.”

Clay eyed Adam. “Don’t forget that we have the marketing proposal for Scheiner’s due by end of the week and we have the video for Bask to prep for next week. I could really use you at work today.”

“I said I’d come. Just late. I’ll be there.”

“No,” Clay said, sensing Adam was going to roll back over and go to sleep again. “Get up and get showered. You’re coming in with me.”

“If this is how it’s going to be with you living here, maybe I should reconsider,” Adam mumbled.

Clay stiffened. “Don’t be an asshole. You did this to yourself and now you’re gonna suffer because of it.”

Adam groaned, but dragged himself out of the bed. He tossed the blanket away, not appearing to care about his bits hanging out. After kicking off his shoes, he proceeded to disrobe, piece by piece, dropping a long line of clothing to the shower. Clay chuckled as he saw Adam’s bare ass disappear into the bathroom.

Clay fished out his phone and walked out as he heard the water come on. He left a quick message for their boss and went back to the kitchen and opened his laptop. While he waited for Adam, he went through a few work emails so he wouldn’t get too late a start.

Twenty minutes later, a clean and dressed Adam came out to meet him. He still looked a bit under the weather, but it served him right for drinking that much on a worknight. “Lightweight.”

“Pain in my ass,” Adam mumbled as he poured a fresh coffee into his travel mug.

Clay closed his laptop before shoving it into his bag and pulling it across his body. “Ready?”

Adam finished adding cream and sugar to his coffee before twisting the cap on. “Ready as I can be.” He followed Clay out to his car and slid into the passenger side silently.

Clay started the engine and then pulled out onto the quiet street.

It went on that way a few blocks before he had to know more. “What you get into last night?”

“A few too many drinks.”

“That’s apparent,” Clay murmured.

Adam didn’t add anything. It was obvious he didn’t want to share.

Clay ran his hand over his pocket, feeling the item inside it and wondering when he’d be able to share. If he should share.

Something had changed between him and Adam over the years. The closeness they’d once had gone. Melanie had gotten between them—possibly more so than he realized. Unless Adam was willing to tell him more…

“You staying mum on what Melanie said last night?”

Adam looked out the side window as Clay glanced his way. He said nothing, adding to the concern Clay felt.

“I think I have a right to know what’s going on between you and my girlfriend,” Clay spat.

“Ex-girlfriend,” Adam mumbled.

“Did you fuck her?”

Adam turned to look at him. “You gonna hit me if I say yes?”

Clay hit the brakes and pulled off onto the side of the road. He spun in his seat and eyed Adam. “Did you?”

Adam stared straight ahead. “Yeah.”

“When?”
