Jesse pushed Hayden back.
He stared at the man who’d been his best friend for the last eight years. Hayden wore a troubled expression on his face, half angry, half expectant.
“I thought…” Hayden started. “I thought wrong.” Hayden spun and stalked away, heading for his car.
Stop him!
Jesse stood there, frozen with fear. He couldn’t get his mouth to work… nor his brain. His heart, that was the one thing still working. It pounded in his chest, demanding he stop Hayden.
The car pulled away. Jesse watched Hayden go, knowing he was being an idiot.
In his desire to not ruin things, they were ruined all the same.
