“My heart is numb when it comes to her. I’m immune to her nonsense.”
“You’re not immune to the pain. You’ve learned ways to cope with it. There’s a difference between the two.”
“It hurts that I have a mother who cares more about controlling me than loving me.” I shrug. “There… I admit it.”
“That was a big step for you to take. I’m proud of you.”
“You’re always going to make me talk about my feelings, aren’t you?”
“You’re marrying a therapist. What do you think?”
“I think it’s a good thing that there’s no one on earth I’d rather talk to than you.”
Chapter20
Caroline Beaumont
New Orleans,Louisiana
Present Day
Saturday morning.Nothing to do. Dawsey and I can stay in bed all day if we choose. I’ve been looking forward to this all week.
“I need you to pack a bag.”
Wait. What? “Why? Where are we going?”
“I have a surprise for you, and it involves going out of town.”
“To go where? And for how long?”
“The surprise part is in the not knowing.”
“I’ve never been one who loves surprises.” That’s putting it mildly. I hate them with a deep, deep passion.
“That’s because I’ve never been in charge of surprising you.”
“Okay, fair argument. What do I need to pack?”
“We’re going somewhere to spend one night, and we’ll come home tomorrow afternoon.”
“Another weekend getaway?” That I like.
“It’s a weekend getaway but very different from the last one.”
“I sure hope so since the objective of the last trip was to break an engagement. What exactly is the objective of this getaway?”
Dawsey grins. “Sorry, my love. I’m not going to tell you that.”
“Will you at least tell me what kind of clothes I need to pack?”
“Same thing you would wear if we were staying in New Orleans for the weekend.”
“That’s not helpful at all.”
“Wear a casual outfit today. Pack a dressier outfit for tonight. You’ll need a casual outfit for tomorrow. And then something sexy for bedtime. Or nothing at all. Your choice.”
The only thing I got out of that is we’re going to have sex tonight, which I already knew. Going out of town isn’t necessary. “That tells me very little.”
