“Hopefully not. See how the baby is rump first? If I can push him forward a bit and reposition his back legs, Izzie should be able to birth him normally. It’s definitely worth a try.” Nathan headed back toward Izzie. “Harper, can you get me a pack of sterile gloves and the lube?”
“Yes,” Harper said. Her stomach churning with worry for Izzie, she hurried to do what Nathan asked.
Chapter 12
“So, other than gaming, what do you do for fun in this town?” Lucas leaned back in the booth, plastering his bestyou find me irresistiblesmile on his face.
Emma ate the last bite of her burger and wiped her mouth with her napkin. “Running a small business means I don’t have a lot of time for other activities.”
He told himself not to look at her amazing tits and then took a quick peek anyway. It wasn’t quick enough. The look of annoyance on her face deepened, and Lucas cursed himself in the head. If he wanted to coax Emma into his bed, he needed to stop ogling her tits like a pervert.
“Your yarn shop is incredibly popular with the tourists and Falls folk,” he said. “I’ve heard a lot of good things about it.”
“Oh yeah? Like what?” she said.
Not expecting her question, he fumbled for something believable. “You, uh, have a great selection of yarn.”
She pushed her empty plate away and sipped at her water. “So, the New Cassel team is known for playing dirty. Which means you need to watch your back every minute of the game.”
“Yes, you mentioned that over dinner,” he said. “Trust me, I know the game. I helped develop it, remember?”
“Right,” she said.
“So, where do you get your great selection of yarn?”
She sighed. “Why are you asking me questions about my shop?”
“I’m fascinated by the world of yarn,” he said.
“Or you think if you pretend to be interested in something I love, that might be enough to convince me to sleep with you.”
He grinned. Fuck, did he love a straightforward woman. He leaned closer, hitting her with another blast of the Lucas grin. “Is it?”
“No,” she said.
“That’s a real shame, beautiful.”
Real anger crossed her face. “My name is Emma. Call me beautiful or gorgeous or sexy, or anything but my name again, and I will kick you out of the gaming group. You may be friends with Nathan, but he will back me up on the decision, as will the others. Do you understand what I’m saying, Lucas?”
“Yes,” he said.
Emma took a deep breath and stared across the diner. The look on her face was a combination of irritation and… shit… was that embarrassment?
His dinner sat in the pit of his stomach like a heavy brick, and he was immediately ashamed of his behaviour. Emma had made it clear that she wasn’t interested in him a few times over dinner, and he’d kept pushing anyway.
He was being an asshole.
“I’m being an asshole,” he said to her. “I apologize.”
“I want to make it clear that I’m not interested in anything but a friendship with you,” she said.
“I understand,” he said. “I’ll stop being an ass, I promise.”
She studied him before a slight smile turned up her lips. “Is that even possible?”
“I’ll be honest. There’s a high percentage that I’ll be an ass again, despite how hard I try,” Lucas said.
That earned him a laugh, and damn if his cock didn’t twitch at the sound of it. Christ, she had a great voice, low and sexy and meant to be moaning his name.
