The look on Addie’s face would have cracked Harper up if she wasn’t concentrating so hard on not staring at Nathan’s beautiful and oh so infuriating face.
“Hello, Harper,” Nathan said stiffly.
“Hey.” She turned to Wyatt, giving him a warm smile. “It’s been a long time, Wyatt.”
“It has. It’s nice to see you, Harper,” Wyatt said.
“You too. You’re looking good.”
She meant it. She’d always thought Wyatt was good looking with his dark hair and tanned skin. His grey-blue eyes had garnered plenty of attention from women. As did the fact that he was a true dyed-in-the-wool cowboy, from the worn cowboy boots and Wranglers to the weathered cowboy hat jammed onto his head.
“Thanks,” Wyatt said. “So are you.”
There was an awkward silence before Nathan said to Addison, “So, you know Harper?”
“She’s my best friend,” Harper said. “Since we were children.”
“That’s nice,” Nathan said without looking at her. After about thirty seconds of even more awkward silence, he said, “I have a busy day at the clinic tomorrow, so I should go. Addison, it was nice seeing you again.”
“You too, Nathan,” Addison said. “Bye, Wyatt.”
“Bye, Addison,” Wyatt said. With a nod to Harper, Wyatt followed Nathan across the parking lot.
Harper waited until they had both climbed into their vehicles and left before she said. “Why didn’t you tell me you knew Nathan?”
“I didn’t know he wastheNathan,” Addison said. “He was the cool drink of water cowboy that I considered bringing home with me when I thought Preacher and I were done with our sex lessons.”
“Are you fucking kidding me? He’s the cowboy you met at The Hitching Post?” Harper leaned against Addison’s vehicle, staring wide-eyed at her. “And you almost went home with him?”
“Honestly? Not really. I spent most of the night talking about Preacher,” Addison said. “Then Preacher showed up when I was dancing with Nathan, and that was it. Preacher took me home, and I had the best sex of my life that night.”
Her voice turned dreamy. “Seriously… the best sex of my life. I could barely walk the next day.”
“Yeah, yeah, good for you, so happy for you. What else did you and Nathan talk about that night?”
“I don’t know… nothing, really.”
“He didn’t tell you anything about himself?” Harper persisted. “Where he’s from, what he does for fun?”
“No, Preacher showed up before I could find out much about Nathan. I remember he was funny and sweet and listened while I talked. He also offered to let me practice the sex stuff I’d learned from Preacher on him, although the age difference did make him pause.”
“How old is he?” Harper wouldn’t admit just how curious she was to know every little detail there was to know about Dr. Nathan Henshaw.
“Thirty-five,” Addison said. “I remember because he acted like he was old enough to be my dad when really, he’s only a few years older than Preacher. I can see why you’re so hot and bothered, though. He really is very handsome.”
“He’s okay,” Harper said, making Addison laugh.
“He’s more than okay, and you know it. I didn’t know he and Wyatt were friends. I haven’t seen Wyatt in town in… I can’t even remember the last time. He sticks pretty close to the ranch since Lydia left him and Harmony Falls.”
“She was such a dick, I say good riddance to her,” Harper said.
“Agreed,” Addison said. “Anyway, I’d better get home. I told Preacher I’d be home by nine, so we could…”
She blushed prettily, and Harper grinned at her. “Bang each other senseless?”
“Something like that,” Addison said. “Are you still planning to talk to your dad tonight?”
“Yes, assuming he’s home and still awake,” Harper said. “I’ll text you tomorrow and let you know how it went.”
