“He hit on me,” she says.
My spine stiffens. “He what?”
“He kissed me tonight.”
Rage builds up inside me, but I’ve had years of practice. I keep my anger under control. There’s no reason to be jealous of a kiss. Unless…
I peer down at her, watching the play of moonlight over her features. “What did you do?”
She fists my shirt and pulls my face down. Her lips smash against mine, and she kisses the breath from me. Her teeth graze against my lower lip, biting softly. She comes up on her toes and curls her hands around my neck.
“I only want to kiss one man,” she says, tangling her fingers in my hair. “You.”
My chest swells, my heart soars, my blood stirs to life.
The words mean so much. Yet, they aren’t enough. I need more. I need to know this isn’t a game or a bet. This is real.
Jay and Mia.
I dig deep, past my fear. “I love you, Mia.”
She stares up at me, then a smile breaks out on her face and she begins to laugh. “God help me, I love you too.”
I kiss her deeply, knowing for the first time, she’s really mine.
CHAPTER 44
Emails from Mia to Jordan
Email message from [email protected]
Dear Jordan,
Please accept the attached notarized document as my formal resignation. I will be working out my two weeks notice, and I would appreciate your support. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. I hope there are no hard feelings between us going forward and that we can maintain a professional relationship.
I will be pursuing the opportunity to assist Morris Birchland in Elena’s defense, so we may see each other on opposite sides of the aisle. It is my wish that we do this without animosity.
Regards, Mia
