Just in case of what?

CHAPTER 22

Smoldering Embrace

“No. No. No.”

I pull all the clothes out of Jay’s suitcase and toss them onto his bed.

“What’s wrong with these?” He rescues a pair of athletic shorts and holds them up. “These are my favorite running shorts.”

“When do you plan on wearing them?”

“When I go for a run.”

I grab them and toss them into the suitcase. “Fine. You can bring them. But you’re only allowed to wear them for running.”

He quirks a dark brow. “Why else would I wear them?”

“I have no idea.” I shake my head, grimacing at the pile of discarded clothes. They are wrong. All wrong. They are never going to fool my family.

Jay rescues a black T-shirt from the heap. It’s a luxury brand with the tags still on. “What about this? It’s new.”

I cross my arms over my chest. “Did you even read the packing list? It said long-sleeved shirts.” I glance at the tattoos peeking out of the shirt he has rolled to his forearms. “It’s best to keep as much of Jay covered as possible.”

“I read it and everything else you attached.” The goldenstreaks in his eyes sparkle. “Congratulations on not having chlamydia.”

My cheeks heat, and I turn toward the door. “The mall closes in two hours. If we leave now, we can make it in time.”

Jay’s hand closes around my wrist, and he spins me around—right into the hard wall of his chest. My heart lodges in my throat, pounding so hard and fast I can’t breathe. We haven’t been this close in weeks. And although he’s always there, he’s usually just out of reach, fully in protector mode.
