“I agree.” Derrick tapped a restless finger on the armrest of his chair. “It’s not like him to be late.”

CHAPTER29

“Linus sends his apologies.Something urgent came up.” Charlotte directed a contrite smile at Armand. “I’m sorry, it completely slipped my mind.”

Armand nodded curtly. “I’ll make a note in the minutes.”

Nadia’s gaze sharpened. “Considering what’s on the agenda today, I find that very curious indeed.”

Karin waved a dismissive hand. “It’s not that unusual.” The witch had reluctantly taken her seat next to Ephra and Gerard. “This meeting wasn’t due to start until 10:30 a.m. anyway. He still has a few minutes left.”

Mae’s skin prickled as she and Bryony took the chairs Armand indicated. She’d just cast a controlled version ofNullify. Though she couldn’t detect any black magic in the room, there was something else there. Something that was being shielded.

Do you feel that?

Yes,Brimstone replied.But I can’t pinpoint where it’s coming from.

Hellreaver hummed faintly, equally alert.

Vlad and Nikolai took up position behind Mae and Bryony. Brimstone leapt onto Mae’s lap.

Ephra cast an uneasy look at the fox and cleared her throat.

“Before we begin, I am well aware that yesterday’s incident has left a sour taste in all our mouths,” she started stiffly. “I will be extending my apologies to Regina and Erik later today but, for now, as the current head of the High Council, I would like to formally express my regret for what took place at the reception last night.”

Mae blinked.That’s unexpected.

There may still be hope for them yet, Brimstone grumbled.

Ephra cut her eyes to Karin and Gerard.

Karin clenched her jaw. “I will admit to losing my temper somewhat.”

“Same,” Gerard admitted grudgingly.

“What the hell did I miss?!” Nadia whispered to Derrick.

Derrick shrugged, his astute gaze swinging briefly to Mae and Brimstone. “I wasn’t there, but I heard it was pretty spectacular.”

“It was epic,” Raven muttered.

Mae exchanged a look with Bryony and Barbara. They dipped their chins.

“And I apologize for my, er, reaction.” Brimstone growled on her lap. She pressed a warning hand to the fox’s flank. “Brim says sorry too.”

I am not in the least bit sorry!the fox snarled.

Hellreaver vibrated against her chest.Yeah, like heck we are!

“Do you guys want lunch?” Mae threatened.

Brimstone’s tail drooped. Hellreaver sulked and grew heavy around her neck.

“Who’s she talking to?” Karin asked Ephra warily.

Ephra stared. “I have no idea.”

Bryony grimaced awkwardly. “I forgot to mention this when we last spoke. Mae can, hmm, communicate telepathically with her familiar and her weapon.”
