Page 30 of Twisted Betrayal

When he got back, Riley had the light off and was lying down on the bed with the blanket covering her.He could tell she was tired.

Although it had been several weeks since the devastating plan to kill their marriage, Riley had woken from nightmares a few times. He was always there to hold and comfort her as she went back to sleep, but he could see it was still taking a toll.

After brushing his teeth, he walked back into the bedroom, turning off the bathroom light as he passed. After stripping out of his jeans, he slid into bed.Riley was instantly against him, and his arms wrapped tightly around her.

He placed a kiss on the top of her head.“Good night, Wife.”

Riley yawned.“Good night, Husband.”

Chapter Thirteen

Riley was outside forrecess with her kindergarten kids, but even that wasn’t distracting her.She found herself thinking about the trial coming up.

She never said anything to her husband, but she could tell he suspected she was having a problem with the situation. She should get over it, but she knew she had to see the woman one more time.It would be an extra bonus to see her convicted and put in prison. She knew once the trial was done, she could finally put it behind her.

The problem was not knowing the date, and it seemed to be taking forever to happen when, in fact, it had only been three weeks. The waiting was messing with her head, and she wasn’t sleeping well.

“Mrs.Matney,” one of her students yelled.“They’re fighting,”

Riley glanced up and saw one of the boys running from a girl.It looked like he had her hair ribbon in his hand.“Thank you, Finn.”

Riley walked toward the kids with the issue. Before she got to them, the little girl tackled the boy, took her ribbon, and walked away.

The look on the boy’s face was priceless. She pressed her hand over her mouth to keep from laughing out loud.

Riley knew he had learned a great life lesson she hoped he’d always remember.Don’t piss off a girl because she’ll knock you down.Riley grinned. She’d have to remember to tell Rick about this. He’d get a kick out of it.

Later that day, she walked into her house, and one look at her husband made her tense.“What is it?”

“They’ve set a date for the trial,” he said and wrapped his arms around her.

She exhaled. Finally, she thought. But then a different kind of nerves started to build.

“Are you sure you want to go?They don’t need you to testify. The prosecutor has everything he needs.”

She nodded.“Yes.I need to see what happens and look her in the eyes.I feel if I don’t, I’ll never have the closure I need.”
