“I’d love to…” She hesitated then added. “But do you think it’s safe?”
“Yeah, I’ll keep an eye out. You’ll be safe with me.”
“Okay. I do want to get out of this house.”
“I don’t suppose you have a hat with you?”
“No.”
“All right. I’ll have to see if I can find you a hat once we get there.”
“I don’t like hats on me.”
“Too bad. I don’t want to see that beautiful skin of yours damaged.”
Patsy smiled. “Who knew the big bad FBI agent would say such things and to me of all people.”
“Who knew we’d end up in bed?”
“I know I wanted to. I was attracted to you from the start.”
“Was?” he asked teasing her with a sexy grin.
“Am…but was then too.”
“Okay, let’s shower, get some food in us then we’ll head to the ranch.”
He rolled off her, swung his legs over the side of the bed, and put his hand out to her.
She smiled and placed her hand in his. “I can’t wait to go.”
Micah smiled at her and her heart soared just seeing it aimed at her.
An hour later, Micah drove the Tahoe up the drive leading to his dad’s ranch. Patsy sat up and looked around. The large white farmhouse with the wraparound porch looked so inviting. A large red barn sat across the yard with several horses in the corral. She could see cattle grazing in the field straight in front of them.
“It’s gorgeous.”
“It is. I love this place. I wouldn’t mind having a place like this one day.”
“You never mention your mom.”
“My parents are divorced. They have been since I was ten. I used to spend the summers here with Dad. They shared custody.”
“You said it was because your dad was FBI too?”
“Yeah. Dad’s job tore them apart. It’s because of him I became an agent.”
She nodded. There was nothing she could say. She imagined being married to an agent was hard on a marriage. How many spouseswere terrified at the prospect of hearing their husband or wife had been killed in the line of duty? She’d seen what Bella had gone through when she’d thought Mont was dead and Patsy couldn’t imagine what that felt like. Bella had been devastated and Patsy had done her best to get her through it and be there for her. The only thing that had kept Bella going was finding out she was pregnant with Mont’s baby and then she found out it wasbabies, as in twins. Colt and Randi were adorable, and Patsy loved them.
Micah stopped the SUV by the side of the house. They opened their doors and stepped out. Patsy inhaled the sweet smell of hay. Putting her hand up to shade her eyes, she gazed around. This had probably been a great place to grow up. She smiled then turned to meet Micah at the front of the vehicle. Taking her hand, he led her into the big, airy kitchen. The floor was made up of large cherry wood planks. The cabinets matched and surrounded black appliances.
“How about you make some sandwiches for us while I go saddle some horses and let Cookie know we’re here.”
“Who’s Cookie?”
“The foreman.”
“All right. How many sandwiches do you want?”
