“Don’t know that either.”
Gwynee squeezes my thigh.“If Lucie can’t raise her baby, then I will.”
“What the fuck?”I clip.
“It’s not the baby’s fault.”
“No, but I’ve been down that road. Not doing it again.”
“No one is asking you to.”
“What are you saying?”
“That if and when the time comes, if she needs someone to do what she can’t, then…” she shrugs.
“You’re not volunteering yourself to cleanup her mess.”
“So, you’d rather the baby goes into state custody?”
“I don’t know, but there’s someone else out there who can step up to the plate.”
“And who would that be?”
“The father.”
“If you can find him and he’s willing.”
“What brought this on?You don’t even want kids.”
“I said I didn’t want kids at the time.There’s a big difference and I don’t know.It got me thinking.”
“We’ll talk about this when we’re alone.”
“Don’t stop talking on my account,” Sissy pipes up.
“What if I’ve changed my mind?”
“I said later, Gwynee,” I snap.
Chapter Seventeen
“Youwanttoexplainto me what that shit in the car was back there?”
I place my earrings on the dresser and slide off my heels.“Not really.”
“Too damn bad. We’re going to talk about this and squash this shit right now.”
“Maybe I don’t want to talk to you right now.”
“The fuck?Where’s the attitude coming from?”
“What? You can dish it out to everyone, but no one is allowed to give it back as good as we get?”
“I don’t want to argue.”He steps toward me, and I take a step back.
“Yeah well. It’s good to want things,” I snap and step around him to shimmy out of my dress.
“Fuck, baby. You don’t fight fair.”His gaze moves up and down my body, checking me out in my underwear as I drop my dress to the closet floor.I ignore him and the heat flushing across my skin.
