I point to the map, tracing the jagged contour lines. "This isn't just a walk in the park. People's lives are in our hands. We're their last line of defense when things go wrong."

Liam clears his throat, his voice steady. "What about the campers down by the river? Should we evacuate them as a precaution?"

I consider for a moment, weighing the risks. "Work with the rangers to get them to higher ground. That valley is a death trap if the river crests."

I survey the room, taking in the determined faces of my team. "I know I'm asking a lot of you. But this is what we train for. This is why we do what we do."

I clasp my hands together, my resolve unwavering. "Tomorrow, we get out there and show this storm what we're made of. I don't want any deaths on my watch."

As the team disperses, I can only hope that Jade heeds the warnings. I know all too well that in a battle between human stubbornness and nature's wrath, the mountains usually win.

JADE

The morning dawns crisp and clear. There's not a cloud in the sky as I stuff a load of snacks into my hiking backpack. I'm moving with a determined focus today, refusing to let that arrogant rescuer's warnings shake my resolve. So what if a little storm might be on the way? I'm not some delicate flower who wilts at the first sign of rain.

I heave my backpack onto my shoulders, lock up my cabin, and make my way around the lake toward the lobby. As I walk past the reception desk, Ivy's warm smile greets me. "Good morning, dear!" Her eyes twinkle with genuine kindness.

I return her smile, but before I can respond, Beau's imposing figure catches my eye. Instantly, my heart skips a beat. God, why does he have to look so ruggedly handsome this early in the morning? I avert my gaze, hoping he can't see the flush creeping up my neck.

"Mornin'," Beau drawls, his deep voice sending heat rushing to my core. "You're not planning on hiking today, are you?"

I bristle at his condescending tone. "And what if I am?"

"That storm I mentioned yesterday is definitely on its way. It's not safe out there." His blue eyes bore into mine with intensity.

I scoff, gesturing to the clear skies outside. "Really? Because it looks pretty sunny to me."

Beau takes a step closer, his broad shoulders filling my vision. "Looks can be deceiving. These mountains are unpredictable."

"I think I can handle a little rain," I snap, my defenses rising.

"This isn't just a little rain we're talking about. It's a severe thunderstorm with high winds and lightning. People die in these conditions." Beau almost growls.

Despite the simmering attraction between us, I refuse to back down. "I appreciate your concern, but I'm a grown woman. I can make my own decisions."

Beau runs a hand through his tousled hair, frustration evident on his chiseled features. "Why are you being so stubborn about this? Is risking your life really worth it?"

"Is underestimating my capabilities really necessary?" I retort, my voice rising. "I'm not a helpless damsel in distress.”

"Jade, please. Just stay inside today. For your own safety." Beau's eyes plead with me. I think I detect a hint of genuine care beneath the exasperation, but I'm too riled up to listen.

With a huff, I storm past him towards the exit. "Thanks for the advice, but I've got a novel to write."

As the resort doors swing shut behind me, I hear Beau's voice shouting after me. "Jade! Come back! Don't be foolish!"

I quicken my pace, boots crunching against the gravel path as I put as much distance between myself and the resort as possible. The nerve of that man! I'll show him just how capable I am.

After a few minutes of brisk walking, I dare to glance over my shoulder. My heart nearly leaps out of my chest when I spotBeau's tall figure still standing outside the resort, watching me. He's gesturing emphatically, clearly wanting me to come back down.

I roll my eyes and turn away, ignoring his silent pleas. I didn't come all the way to Colorado to be coddled and condescended to. I came here to immerse myself in the rugged wilderness and write the next great romantic thriller.

With renewed determination, I veer off the main path and begin ascending a narrow trail that winds its way up the mountainside. The incline is steep, and I feel the burn as I push myself harder.

As I climb higher, the resort shrinks smaller and smaller behind me until it's just a speck in the distance. A sense of exhilaration fills me, the thrill of adventure coursing through my veins.

The air grows colder as I gain elevation today, and I shiver slightly in my light jacket. Maybe I should have packed warmer layers. But it's too late to turn back now. I'm committed to this hike, to proving myself.
