Chapter 2
Brann
Paperwork, schmaperwork. I did it to myself. Yet I’m still angry about it. A glance at the clock tells me the recruit, Mr. Beckett, should be here in half an hour. No one else should come in until after lunch. That will give us plenty of time to tour the building and start the paperwork process.
The hiring process has been slow and painful. Bjorn Cragbeard was a great addition to our team. But since then, three people have left. One disgruntled with small town life. Another switched to fishing offshore, and a third took a job at a national park. It would be a lie to say I wasn’t a little jealous of a job at a big mountain with more resources, and in theory, more people doing stupid shit to rescue. As much as I love my job, sometimes we end up rescuing Mrs. Hood’s pet goats who keep following the sound of the mountain goats, rather than actual people. This island is in my blood, so if it means rescuing goats, so be it.
Recruit N. Beckett has an impressive record, despite a several-year gap. We don’t get tons of applications, so I’m happy to work with him and do extra training if necessary.
“Hello?” A woman’s voice rings out, pulling me out of my paperwork. I know that voice. That voice was in my dreams, crying out my name over and over again last night. Walking out of my office, I trip over my own feet, almost landing on my ass on the floor. Which, looking at the woman standing before me, would be a great place to be—worshipping her.
“Hello, can I help you?” I ask, once I’ve got my footing and caught my breath. She jumps back a little when she sees me, then she clenches her jaw, steels her gaze, and holds her hand out to me. It doesn’t tremble or shake.
“I’m Natasha Beckett. The recruit. You must be Captain Suthorn.”
The woman from the café yesterday is my new employee. N. Beckett. Natasha Beckett. How did I miss that distinction? The woman I shagged on the cliff’s edge after sunset is my new employee. My heart thumps, both in panic and pleasure.
And she expects me to be her boss, train her and take her into the wilderness for training. My mouth runs dry and I can’t get my eyes to move away from her fierce, dark eyes.
Taking her hand and shaking it is like hugging an electrified fence. The jolt of electricity goes right through me. Straight to my dick. My smell is all over her. It’s enough to cripple whatever brain cells I have firing.
She’s mine.Natasha, gods, what a delightful name. My tongue aches to say her name, purr it in delight. Instead, I clear my throat.
“Yes. Hello. Nice to meet you. Let me get your paperwork.”
I’m totally screwed.
Chapter 3
Tasha
When HR hired me andsaid I would be working in the small town of Moonfang Haven, I sighed in relief. Exactly the pace of life I want for Lucy and me. When they said it was a diverse workforce, I cheered inside.
What they didn’t tell me, though, is that my direct boss was going to be an orc. And not just any orc. A big, husky, rippled with muscles orc, a smattering of silver in his dark hair, and a scowling face that makes me want to beg for mercy.
Not that they would know that at the first opportunity to be alone in ages, my kid safely with the nanny I hired, I would fuck him. Of course, I didn’t know who he was.
