“All right, but it’s going to be obvious in a bit which one we’re heading to.”
She scooted over on the seat and threw both arms around me.
“I’m so happy to see my boyfriend,” she said in a sing-song voice. “It’s been too long.”
“I missed you, too,” I said. “But I promise you’ve got me for the next three days pretty much all to yourself, give or take a zoom meeting here or there.”
She cocked an eyebrow. “Wait a minute. Does this have anything to do with the fact you took me to apply for a passport last week?”
I shrugged. “I don’t recall mentioning anything of the sort.”
“Uh-huh.” She looked out the window and then glanced up at me. “We’re heading for the airport, aren’t we?”
I cursed inwardly. “You’re too smart to surprise.”
“Oh, I wouldn’t say that. You should take it as a challenge. So where are we going? Chicago? LA? St. Louis?”
“That’s for me to know and you to find out.”
“Oooh, listen to you,” she said. “So ambitious. I bet I can guess it before we arrive.”
“We’ll see about that.”
I kissed her, tasting her perfect lips against my own. I loved her scent, the feel of her soft body, the way that she kneaded my chest with her nails through my silk shirt.
“Calm down now,” she said, slapping my hands away. “I know it’s been a few days since we last saw each other, but we’re almost there. You shouldn't try to start something you don’t have time to finish.”
“You’re setting the bar rather high,” I said with a laugh.
“Would you have it any other way?”
“No.” I stroked a hand across her glossy smooth mane. “I wouldn’t. The fact that you challenge me is one of the reasons I really do like being with you.”
I stumbled a little over my words. I didn’t want to say too much. I firmly believed I was falling hard for Megan—if I hadn’t fallen already. However, I found myself reluctant to come out and admit my feelings.
Looking back, I think it was because of my parents. There was a deep-seated idea in the back of my mind that sooner or later I must always lose the ones that I loved.
We pulled directly onto the tarmac, and she gaped at the sight of my shiny chrome private jet.
“Oh my god,” she said, settling back into her seat.
“Are you all right? You seem a little pale.”
“It just hit me how much money you have,” she said. “I can’t help but feel like we’re from two different worlds. Don’t get me wrong, this has been great, but—are we kidding ourselves about where it’s going to lead? I mean, look at us…”
She sighed, gesturing to my business attire and her bohemian get up.
“…justlookat us.”
I caressed her cheek with my hand. “All I see is a man and a woman.”
With that, I kissed her, and there was no more silly talk about us not being meant for each other.
Chapter Twenty-Five
Megan
It wasn’t until we were on the tarmac waiting for the go-ahead to take off that I saw a huge flaw in Mason’s surprise trip plan.
