“The King wants to see me, and then I think he has something for us to take care of.”

“Copy.”

“Where are you?”

“Taking care of something.”

“At six in the morning?”

“At whatever time I need to,” I winked at Haven. “I’m heading out right now.”

“Alright, man. I’ll see you soon.”

I ended the call, pulled my pants up, and slid my phone back into my pocket. “I’m sorry, there’s something I have to handle. I’ll make it up to you, I promise.”

“Rain check?” she sighed, leaning back on her elbows.

“God, yes,” I promised as I put on my T-shirt and searched for my leather jacket, which had found its way to the pink velvet chaise in the corner of her room.

She had slipped out of her bed and covered her nakedness with another oversized shirt. “Hey, listen. I hate to put a damper on everything, but it’s probably best if you stay clear of my apartment for the next few days.”

I turned to face her to see her looking at her feet and not at me. I lifted her chin, forcing her to meet my gaze. “Were you not satisfied?”

“To the contrary, I was…the orgasms I had were top tier. It’s…” She paused, struggling to find the right words.

“What is it, little lamb?”

“My brother promised to punish me for my behavior at the quarry. I don’t want you getting caught in the middle.”

“If he lays a finger on you, I’ll break every single one of his.”

“You don’t know my brother,” she protested.

“I know enough. Enough to know that your brother may think he’s the dominant wolf, but let me make something very clear—I am the bigger wolf, and I will tear him apart piece by piece and leave him to rot where no one will ever find him.”

She looked up at me impassively, eyeing me with suspicion. “Okay,” she replied quietly.

“I’ll see you soon,” I promised.

Archer was upstairs conversing with his father, Cassian King, while Theo and I waited in the car. Theo was engrossed in texting on his phone, trying to keep it hidden from view. I couldn't help but glance at my watch, the ticking of the seconds amplifying my impatience as we waited for Archer to return.

“What’s been going on with you?” I asked, my voice sharp and curious.

Theo looked up from his phone, his confusion and irritation evident in his expression. “What do you mean?” he asked with a distracted voice.

“I mean the girl from the other night. Who was she?” I probed.

“A friend,” Theo shrugged nonchalantly, returning his attention to his phone.

“Ah, the classic ‘just a friend’ response,” I scoffed. I didn’t buy it for a minute.

“Are you really going to open this can of worms?” Theo raised his eyebrow, clearly reluctant to discuss the topic.
