“Oh, nothing’s wrong. That was perfect. I just wonder if… this will change everythingng. What if it changes us?”
“It will change us,” I tell her, sitting up.
I can see fear flash across her face as she sits up with me. I press my palms against her cheeks and try to catch her gaze even as she looks down at her fingers.
“Hey, look at me.” She flashes me those beautiful green eyes again, and I offer her a genuine smile.
“It will. There is no reality where this doesn’t change us. But all change isn’t bad, right?”
“Right…” she trails off, looking around. “But this is big.”
“You know what else was big? It was big when you decided to become a CPA, and it was big when you decided to start a business.”
I jiggle her cheeks a little, and a small laugh sputters out of her.
“It was big to move out and be on your own, big to live in your office. It was big when you lost your virginity. Just now, telling me you love me, that was big. Life is just a series of big, and little, moments.”
She nods at me and exhales a shaky sigh.
She kisses me lightly on the cheek, and I pull her into a hug, telling her, “Come here, poor thing.”
She breathes deeply against my neck, and I smile as her head squishes into my cheek.
“There is nothing too big for how I feel about you. everythingng big has brought me right here to this moment. I chose this life with you in a thousand little ways. You realize that, right?”
When she doesn’t answer, I shake my shoulder. “Huh? Do you realize that? That you made all your big choices and it still got you right here in bed with me?”
Hannah squeezes me closer and whispers, “I guess so.”
“Hey, don’t sound so grateful.” She laughs, and I continue, “I’m not so bad, right?”
“No, you’re not bad at all,” she murmurs into my neck in a way that sounds like a song, and I can’t help but smile at the gentle tone she uses.
I pull back and kiss her deeply, feeling the way her lips press back automatically and fit perfectly into the space that mine leave.
“I am going to make life so good for us that you never wonder what else could have been. I promise. everythingng will be okay. I love you. I love Lucy. I love your parents and Tyler. What else is there?”
“You called her Lucy,” she says, smiling at her lap.
“Don’t get used to it.”
Chapter Thirty Five
Hannah
I wake up a few hours later on top of Chris’ chest, though he doesn’t seem to mind.
He snuffles slightly, no snoring but noises coming from him that sound like a restful puppy.
I move away from him to go back to the guest room, and he pulls me in again, his arm around my waist. He lets out a little grumble of dissatisfaction and whines as I scoot out from under his arm.
I smile at the boyish way his face crumbles into a dissatisfied frown, his brow furrowed.
I kiss the bridge of his nose and smooth it out with my index finger as though I can erase his feeling of discontentment. Chris sighs gently and rolls over onto his stomach.
I open the door slowly and tiptoe out and down the hall, trying to keep my steps light so that I don’t squeak the floor underneath me in a way that will wake up either Chris or my mother.
I make it almost to my bedroom before I hear my mother say, “Hannah?”
