I lean against his head, unable to look into his frightfully sincere eyes anymore. I hug him and giggle as he continues.
“You are my absolute dream girl, Hannah. You found your way over my walls and into my heart, and now I can’t imagine life with you. I never saw myself doing this. I honestly didn’t think I was capable of loving so completely and thoroughly. But when I look at your face, it’s like a siren call to be my best self. You are my better angel.”
I roll my eyes, and he shakes my hand.
“No, really. You are empathetic, witty, brave, and resourceful. I would be forever honored to be your partner. Will you marry me, Hannah?” He pulls the ring out of his pocket and shows me it finally, after all this time.
It’s a simple band of thirty diamonds, three rows of ten small diamonds in a gold setting.
It’s exactly me, and that’s reassuring in the same way that everythingng Chris does is reassuring.
He has a way of showing up at the right time and doing exactly the right thing, as though he has a map of my truest desires.
I press my fingers to my cheeks, feeling the streaks of tears on them. “Yes, Chris, I will marry you.”
He slips the ring on my finger and holds me across the waist. “Finally,” he laughs and then calls out, “She said yes! You can come out now!”
I watch in awe as everyone I love comes spilling out of different spots in my home. I hear the front door open, and Scott comes back inside, a mischievous grin on his face.
My mother and father come out of hiding to hug me and Tyler wraps his arm around Chris’ neck.
everythingng is as it should be, even if they’ve all woken up two cranky year-old toddlers.
I watch Chris jostle them out of their stroller, handing one to my mother and holding another up in the air to coo and laugh with.
Tyler comes up to me, smiling, and kisses my cheek. I smile at him and hug him for the brief second that he’ll let me. I am so glad my brother is back in our lives. He’s the best uncle I could have hoped to give my children.
“Well, it took a while, and things were complicated, but you’re finally engaged.”
He bumps me with his shoulder when I ignore him. “It did all work out, didn’t it?”
It surely did.
Yep.
It surely did.
