You’ve read too many romance novels. Calm down, Maisie.
But it didn’t matter what she told herself. There was no stopping those growing feelings.
And as pretty as the scene before her was—the mountains and trees painted pink and yellow by the setting sun—she couldn’t take her eyes off that man who sat behind the wheel.
Usually not the type to make the first move, she couldn’t help herself as she reached for Declan’s right hand that rested onthe center console. He shifted it and a moment later, they were holding hands, causing sparks to rain down Maisie’s core.
He took his eyes off the road just long enough to smile at her.
She smiled back.
In that moment, everything was perfect.
Despite the way it had started, something told her this date was going to be amazing.
And that it just might change her life.
Chapter Twelve
Back at camp, Naomi and Sophia were on the prowl.
They’d changed out of their Little dresses, each one wearing dark leggings and a t-shirt, trying to blend in as much as possible as they stayed close to the trees and bushes.
It had taken some doing, but they’d managed to locate which cabin Derek was in. He’d rented one with another guy, and thanks to spying on the two men as they chatted outside, they now knew that guy’s name was Chad.
Others had to be involved. The attack with the silly string and water guns had revealed at least four perpetrators. But right now, this was a start.
“We don’t know this Chad guy is in on all this,” Naomi whispered as she hunkered low behind a row of shrubs not far from the cabin.
“True. But he seems just as douchie as Derek, from what I’ve heard him saying,” Sophia replied quietly.
Naomi laughed. She couldn’t refute that assessment. They’d overheard some conversation that revealed both men to be arrogant, sexist jerks.
She watched a moment and then said, “They’re on the move. Come on.”
They gave the two men a head start and then crept quietly after them. The trees eventually gave out, so they just hung backas far and as casually as they could, making it appear as if they were simply out for a nighttime stroll.
Thankfully, the guys never cast a glance over their shoulders or seemed to notice that anyone was following.
A moment later, at the front of the parade ground, near the flagpoles, the guys met up with two women.
They looked to be the same ones Derek had been sitting with at dinner the night before.
Having to keep their distance to not be noticed, Naomi and Sophia couldn’t hear what was being discussed. But it sure looked suspicious, as if they were conspiring, though Naomi thought that might just be her imagination.
She quickly learned her first inclination was right. The group was up to no good. That much was confirmed when the men and women split, with the guys going back in the direction they’d come. Naomi and Sophia quickly jumped behind a row of bushes and were close to being spotted, it seemed, but neither Derek nor Chad acted as if they noticed them.
After a few moments, Naomi said, “Something tells me we should follow the women.”
Sophia nodded and they set out, hurrying to catch up to their quarry.

“You were right,” Sophia commented as they entered the kitchen area of the cafeteria.
It was supposed to be closed for the night, but the front door was still unlocked while the building and grounds folks did a little work around the place. This allowed the two suspicious women—and Sophia and Naomi—entry.
Inside, the women had hurried to the giant, walk-in fridge. Holding back, Sophia and Naomi watched as they stole about two dozen eggs.
