“Nope. Just needed a little courage to come over.”
She didn’t remember seeing his car in the lot, but she wasn’t looking for it either. “Please tell me you didn’t drive.”
“I didn’t drive.”
“Then how’d you get here?”
“I drove.”
She gnashed her teeth. “You just told me you didn’t.”
“Because you told me to say it.”
“Goddamnit, Wes.”
“Don’t worry, didn’t get too far. I parked and walked the rest of the way.”
“Parked where?”
“At that bar. Whatchamacallits down the block. Lola’s.”
“Lena’s?” He nodded. “That’s more like five blocks away.”
“Better than driving.”
She sighed. “Wes, tell me what you’re doing here.”
“To see if you’ve forgiven me and ready to take me back. Figured enough time passed.”
“Forgiven you for what?”
“For Diana.”
“What about Diana?”
“Isn’t that why you broke up with me?”
She’d kill for that chocolate. “I’ve had a long day, Wes. And I’ve also filled my quota of drunks. So, please stop talking in riddles so I can start dreaming about tomorrow.”
“Huh.” A fresh wave of daze splashed over his face. “And here I thought you were mad that I slept with her.”
“Wait, what? When?”
“Good. If you’re not mad, then we can forget it ever happened.”
She rubbed her temples. Diana? She was considered more Wes’s friend than Ivy’s but still... what?
“You aren’t mad anymore, right? Because you know it was only a couple times. I think.”
What? How hadn’t she noticed something going on? Oh yeah, because I wasn’t that into him. She wasn’t upset, but she was surprised as hell. Wes was one of the nice, decent guys. Those kinds didn’t cheat.
“I’m not mad, and it doesn’t matter. That wasn’t the reason we broke up. We were no longer the right person for each other, and probably never were. I need more and so do you. We just grew apart. I already explained this to you.”
“Yeah, but I thought Diana was why we grew apart. And you couldn’t talk about it then because it was still too fresh.”
“No, Wes. If I’d known you were cheating, I would’ve said something. Don’t you know me well enough by now?”
She’d been overjoyed at how easily he’d taken the news that it was over and figured it just wasn’t his nature to fight about it. Now she realized he’d probably just felt guilty and didn’t want to make it worse.
