“What other plans did you have with Alonzo?” Jude’s eyebrows narrowed slightly.

Emma’s mouth snapped shut.

“Come now. You obviously have an endgame here. Why are you in Last Chance County?”

She ignored him and took a drink of water.

“Where did you get the Glock clips?”

Nothing.

“We know you’re working with the militia.” Obviously they didn’tknow, but this was one of Jude’s techniques. Trying to get a reaction out of her again.

A sliver of a smile slid up her face, but she didn’t say anything. Emma sat back, let her gaze scan the room, and avoided making eye contact with Jude.

“It’s only a matter of time before we figure this out. Why are you targeting the gangs?”

Emma picked up her water bottle and began to peel off the label.

Great. They were getting nowhere.

Jude fired off a few more questions, but she’d shut down. Eventually he stood up. “Seems like you might need a little time to think things over. I’ll be back later. In the meantime, I hope you’ll consider my offer. Helping us will help you.”

“Yeah, right,” Emma muttered under her breath as he left the room.

Penny met him in the hall. “Is that it? That’s all you’ve got? We need answers from her.”

“You saw her. She was done. But we did get something. A name. I figure we look into Alonzo, and I’ll come back with more ammunition. It’s more likely she’ll cooperate then.”

“Fine.” She spat the word out between clamped teeth.

“What’s wrong with you?”

“Nothing. It’s just my career on the line here.” She huffed, hoping to throw him off the scent.

“There’s something else. Something…more.” His brows furrowed together as he studied her. “What did Bryce do?”

Penny sputtered. “What do you mean? Nothing! He did nothing. Nothing is wrong.”

“Huh. You’re usually much better at lying.” He turned and walked down the hall to the open office area.

She ran to catch up to him. “Why do you think I’m lying?”

“It doesn’t matter. Ah, Anthony. Can we use your desk and computer?” Jude asked the officer. Anthony and Olivia were chatting with their sergeant.

“Sure.” Tony led them to his desk. It was neat and organized. If Bryce worked here, he’d probably have piles of paper and leftover food on his. And most likely pictures of his family, his team. He took those things seriously. Anthony had nothing personal.

Jude handed Penny his tablet. “You and Olivia look on this. Anthony, we got a name for Emma’s boyfriend. Alonzo. We need a last name and as much information as we can find on him.”

“You got it.” Tony sat down and started typing.

“What about you?” Penny asked.

“I’m calling the office in California. If there’s a Sosa connection, I want to know how we missed it.” Jude took out his phone and left the room.

“Might as well get comfortable, Mitchell.” Tony grinned and pulled an office chair from the empty desk next to his for her.

After the better part of an hour, they still had nothing. Penny was ready to put the tablet down and pry some answers out of Emma.
