Well, wasn’t that just fucking fantastic.

“I don’t know anything about your system. Alec wouldn’t tell me anything even if I asked. And I didn’t ask. But, honestly, I don’t think there will be any more of my people making surprise visits to your home. It’s just not something that I can guarantee and I would rather we were safe than sorry. Now that you’re no longer living your life in hiding you have to always be careful. Always.”

Of all the scenarios I could have imagined when being reunited with this man this conversation wouldn’t have ever made the list.

“I’d like to get to know you and the young woman you’ve become. I’ll have Betty get a hold of you to set up a time for us to have dinner together sometime this week. We can get a weekly dinner set up until you’re ready for more than just dinners.”

I just stared at him. Had I heard that right? He had to be out of his damn mind.

“I’m not having dinner with you. Ever,” I said in horror.

“Oh, yes you will, daughter,” he said as he adjusted his tie at his throat. “I can be very persuasive when I want to be and I’mmore than willing to get my hands dirty in order to get what I want.”

“Are you threatening me?” I snapped.

“No. Not you, Ruby Jane. Never you.”

I wanted to be relieved by that but I wasn’t. If he wasn’t threatening me then just who in the hell was he threatening? I had quite the list of people to threaten now.

I probably should have never come here because seeing this man hadn’t gotten me anywhere.

“Are we done here?” I asked snidely as I stood up.

“For now. But we’ll never be done for forever, Ruby Jane. You’re my daughter and I won’t let you ever forget that. Never again.”

I was afraid of that.

Chapter 33

Istopped by Betty’s desk on my way out. It’d be rude not to. We exchanged numbers because she insisted on it and I didn’t have the heart to tell her no. Not after what she’d said to me earlier.

I had a feeling I was stuck with Betty taking up a permanent role in my life. I had a feeling I’d be getting a whole lot more phone calls and texts from her that had more to do with my life than what my father wanted from me.

I didn’t know how I felt about that because I knew she worked for him and would report everything back to him if that’s what he wanted her to do.

Karlie the bitchy vampire and the one male demon were missing from the waiting room. But the demon who’d spoken to me and then looked at me with kind eyes was sitting on the corner of Betty’s desk, waiting patiently for me.

“I’ll walk you out to your car, to make sure you get out of here safely.”

If looks could kill the demon would be dead after that statement. Bane and Roan were not pleased by it.

I didn’t really care because I could get myself to my car all on my own. But I’d let him walk me out anyways. It was probably part of the job and he was just following orders.

“Sure. Let’s get out of here. What’s your name?”

Bane and Roan didn’t walk beside me this time. The demon walked beside me down the hallway. Both twins walked in front of us with their heads pressed together and I knew they were plotting.

“You can call me Rym.”

Rym. That was an unusual name but then again what did I know about demons. Not as much as I should have.

“What did you do to end up being stuck escorting me around? Are you on his shit list or something?” I asked him teasingly.

He stopped walking and looked at me strangely. “Are you being serious right now? How do you not know when it’s obvious to everyone else?”

I cocked my head to the side, curiously. I had no idea what he was talking about. “How do I not know what?” I wasn’t a big fan of being kept in the dark when it came to anything. Especially when it involved me.

“I’m not stuck with escorting you anywhere, as you said. When Johnathon asked weeks ago I volunteered. And I’m not the only one, but I’m sure you’ll meet the rest of them later. Iwantedto guard you. As for being on his shit list, well, he would never trust you with someone he didn’t trust himself.”
