Roan put his hand on his brother’s shoulder in what looked like an attempt to soothe him. “I don’t think we’re too late atall and think there’s still a chance for us. Did you see her at the funeral? She might be the Prince’s mate but there’s no denying that she and that cop got something going on, too. She was way too cozy with him and Rally didn’t seem to have a problem with it. It’s not like we weren’t going to share her with each other. If we have to accept that she comes with them then so be it. Just so long as I don’t have to walk away from her again then I’m alright with that. Maybe we even deserve it after what we did to her. I know we were young but we never should have agreed to leave without her once we realized how much she meant to us. We both gotta live with that regret for the rest of our lives.”
I blinked, confused and maybe even in a little bit of shock. Did he really just say what I thought he said? Had I heard that right?
What the actual fuck.
Did they just decide to share me with each other and Rally and the Detective if they had to?
What exactly had they meant by sharing?
And why did they think it was okay to be having this conversation here of all places.
I started to walk around them but came up short and froze. There were two men and a woman approaching us.
The woman was built like a ballerina. Tall and rail thin. She even moved gracefully, like a dancer. She had hair so blonde it was almost white and it fell in thick waves down past her shoulders. There was something very predatory about her that raised my hackles and put me on edge.
I was guessing she was a vampire.
The two men were demons. One was short and stocky with dark brown hair that was buzzed close to his skull. The second man was medium height with short brown hair and black, thick framed glasses.
They smelled like sulfur and sin.
The men were watching Roan and Bane. The woman only had eyes for me.
She was the real threat here so I had no idea why the men had even come out with her. A show of force, perhaps?
I wasn’t impressed.
Roan stepped up on my right side with Bane moving in close on the left side.
I didn’t know what this was about but I was glad to have the twins here with me so I didn’t have to face it all on my own.
Who would have thought I’d be happy to have them with me?
Chapter 31
“Ruby Jane Maredo,” the woman purred in a husky voice. “We’ve been expecting you and waiting to escort you inside.”
That did not bode well for me. It meant my father knew I’d be showing up here eventually and I’d really like to know how he knew that. Were there cameras out here in the parking lot? I did not like that he was expecting me, or that he’d sent his little lackeys out to escort me inside.
“Unfortunately, the hunters aren’t exactly welcome here, so I hope you’ll understand why I’m going to ask that they remain here.”
I couldn’t help it, I laughed at the absurdity of the whole thing.
The woman lost her friendly but bland look as she pursed her lips, looking annoyed. I didn't think she was used to being laughed at and I didn’t think she enjoyed it all that much.
Bummer for her. I could care less.
“Listen, lady,” I said in a falsely friendly voice. “I don’t really give a fuck what Johnathon Maredo wants. The hunters are coming with me and Daddy Dearest can just get over it. You can get over it, too, because we’re going inside now. I’m not aboutto stand out in the parking lot and waste any more of my time talking to you. So, either lead the way or get the fuck out of it.”
She sneered at me and her pretty face morphed into something ugly right before my eyes. The skin around her face tightened and I knew the vampire was fighting for control. “You’ve got a smart mouth, little girl. I don’t like your attitude. You’re lucky my master said no harm was to come to you or I’d rip you apart limb by limb.”
Little girl? Okay. I’d let that one go because who the hell knew how old the bitch was but I did not like her and I wasn’t going to let much else go with her.
I shrugged carelessly. “You could try. I’d be interested to see what you lose in the process.”
“Ruby,” Bane hissed in warning at me under his breath.
I didn’t need him to tell me when to shut my mouth, that’s not why I had asked them to come here. Besides, the woman was right, I definitely had a smart mouth, I wasn’t even going to lie.
