“Sounds like a really sad story—maybe you’ll remember it and tell me one day?” She frowns, leaning forward and dropping a gentle kiss on his lips. “You’re right about the blood thing though… and it’s why I try and avoid all the wolf bullshit—try to blend in. That’s what makes this between us so… I don’t know. I don’t understand what’s happening. Seriously, I’m like a schoolgirl with a crush. I just don’t find all this easy to deal with. What we are, it’s not something I’m comfortable with and to be honest, I feel like a freak. We had no choice to be this way. Don’t you ever wish we could just be normal like real people? Instead, of the monsters we are. Never being ourselves, having to hide.”

“No, can’t say I do, I’ve never wished to be anythin’ else other than what I am. I like being a wolf. And anyway, what the hell is normal? You mean like a person who doesn’t shift or someone who isn’t different? Where are you drawin’ the line on bein’ different?”

“Yeah but… we’re dangerous… freaks. What we are isn’t normal however you try to dress it up. But I get why you like it, why wouldn’t you? For a guy like you, this is a perfect life. The status—guys look up to you and they show you respect. And girls… well, we stupidly fall into your bed.”

“What the hell…guys like me?You know nothing about me. And I’ll have you know, not all Alpha’s, are the complete dogs you think. Well… maybe a little. But this is what nature made us—what she wanted us to be. Still… maybe if I had a good influence in my life, then I could change? I mean, we’ve got like a thousand years give or take—if I don’t get myself killed. And now we have a top-class medic on the team, well… she might just keep me around a while longer.”

“I never said I was a good influence,” she says, smiling. Leaning forward, stroking his hair, she kisses him. “But I am a damn-good-medic, that part is true.”

“Really, not a good influence? Well then, Lieutenant Morgan… you’re gonna need to tell me more. Look, seriously Kat I don’t care, I’ll wait. But you are gonna make the team. Though this, what you are—Luna, I can’t hide it from the guys forever. But I will give you some time. I won’t say anything, at least not ‘til you make the team. Is that a deal?”

“Okay, deal! But I have another condition, about me and you…. That you don’t bring women back. What I mean is, you don’t fuck in the house, not if you want me to stay there.”

“Okay, yeah sure. I won’t fuck anyone in the house. No… no, what I mean is, I won’t fuck anyone else. From now on I’ll be exclusive. If that’s what you want? I’ll be a lone wolf kinda guy. Only a one-wolf man,” he says, kissing her again.

“Hmm, we’ll see. Just keep them out of the house for now, and… that includes Rosie.”

“So, does that mean you’re gonna think about letting me… you know, dothat?”

“I don’t know what that means. I told you, I need to focus and concentrate on securing my place. Ryan, I want this so much—I want in that team, and I can’t let this between us fuck that up.”

“It won’t, I promise. And I get it, I do. Now, are you hungry? Because I’m fuckin’ starvin’, and I know this great late-night burger joint, on West point.”

“Yeah, I’m hungry. C’mon, drive. I’ll let you buy me dinner.”

“See… what’d I say about Luna wolves—bossy as hell.”

Chapter 13

Looking up, Digby frowns as Kat as enters the room. She’s dressed in smart black pants, a matching jacket and a crisp white shirt - which he can’t help but notice is unbuttoned to her bra. “Whoa…He frowns. “Are you goin’ somewhere? Because, you know, you might wanna fixthatbefore you go?” He gestures toward the open button.

“Oh yeah… right.” She smiles, pulling the shirt together—but not actually doing it up. “I have a meeting with the medical board, it’s a thing about my license. Nothing to worry about, just dot someI’scross someT’s—insurance stuff about my change in position, you know,” she stammers while forcing a smile. “I won’t be long. It’s just a formality.”

“Okay,” he says, hesitant. He’s concerned and watching her, something about her mannerisms makes him think she’s lying.“So, you want me to give you a ride?”

“No. No, it’s okay, I booked a cab. Really, I won’t be long.” She smiles, collecting her purse from the chair and with it the binder lying next to it.

His frown deepens as he watches her leave, and he wonders what she’s reallydoing. But he’s not able to question her further as he’s distracted by the guys as they arrive laden with beer and snacks.

“Hey, so we figured you two might want some company.” Zak frowns, looking at Digby still stood in the doorway watching as Kat gets into the waiting cab. “Where’s she goin’?”

“You know, I’m not sure. She said she has some medical license thing, somethin’ to do with insurance for her position, but that’s bullshit. I mean, command would take care of that. They deal with all that shit, don’t they?”

“So, what, you don’t believe her? You think she lied?”

“I don’t know,” he says. “I guess I have to take her at her word. I mean, why would she lie to me?” He looks at Zak, who just shrugs. “We had a great day yesterday and really got to know each other so much more. I thought we connected because she told me…things, things about herself.”

Zak stares, a concerned frown etched deep in his forehead. “Diggs… is there somethin’ you wanna tell me?”

“Uh no. Well, maybe, but it’ll keep for now.” He sighs, staring out of the door, watching as the cab drives away.

“Hey stop worryin’ alright. I’m sure there’s some kinda explanation.”

“Yeah, you’re right. Perhaps I’m just over thinkin’ this,” he says, patting Zak on the shoulder. “So, what’d ya bring me?”

“Oh… Bud got this DVD.” He laughs. “He got it off some internet site. Do you wanna check it out?Russian ladies in combat gear… with guns.” He smiles, the others joining in with the laughter.

“Seriously? And you wanna watch that crap?”
