“Close, professional footballer,” Xavier whispers, as another young guy approaches the bar. She helps him, grabbing a Carona from the fridge behind us. He gives me the once-over while he waits, and I smile politely. He keeps moving toward a table of other men who all look just as athletic.

We have been playing this game all night. Pick the occupation. Xavier says she does it with all her new girls to warm them up. I’m grateful, it’s a fun distraction.

“What about this guy?” I ask, unsure exactly what he might do. He walks toward us with the cocky swagger of someone withpower. “He’s got to be in some sort of management role. Does he run a company?”

She drops her head closer to mine. “He’s the mayor,” she whispers under her breath as he approaches the bar.

The mayor has a membership! Is there anyone in this town who doesn’t?

As she serves him, I glance across the room to where Kobe sits at a booth with one of his brothers and a couple of young women. They have been there for about an hour. Even though he has company, I can feel his eyes on me. I know exactly what he wants, but I have to ignore the come-fuck-me eyes he keeps giving me. I need this job, and Xavier has read me the staff policies. It’s forbidden for staff to fraternize with management. So even though my body calls to him like a bitch in heat, I need to keep my legs closed. This job is my only hope of getting the intel Detective Reader is after.

It’s my own damn fault Kobe is looking at me like he wants to bend me over the bar. What possessed me to flirt with him during the club tour? Definitely not my intention when I walked into this place this afternoon. I think it was the sexy atmosphere in that room that had me all tingly. And the way his eyes lingered on me longer than they should have, and maybe the fact that I have never been so physically attracted to a man before in my life. His alluring lingering gazes made me want to forget what I’m doing here and have a dirty night of fun with him, just because I know he would be up for it.

It could have also had something to do with the phone call I got this morning reminding me of what I’m running away from.

Either way, around Kobe, I have this baffling desire to be reckless. It turns me into one ofthem, the club bunnies that follow him around, and it’s sickening. I’m disgusted with myself for feeling like this. He throws me a wink, and I realize I havebeen watching him for a lot longer than I should. I quickly refocus my attention on Xavier.

“Don’t even let it cross your mind,” she says, a mischievous spark in her words. She caught me gawking at him as well.

“What?” I ask, my expression a mix of guilt and bemusement. I can’t help but feel I’m wearing my emotions on my sleeve, and I mentally berate myself for being so transparent. My dad was so good at hiding his emotions, and I wish I could be the same. It’s a necessity in this line of work.

She subtly gestures toward the Rivera brothers.

A grin tugs at the corner of my lips. “I promise, I wasn’t even considering it.”

“I’ve seen that look before in girls just like you. It’s bad news. Stay away from him. He’s a fun guy to have as your boss, if you don’t screw around with him, but he’s a womanizing manwhore. I have seen smart, pretty girls just like you come through this place, year after year, thinking they can change him. That somehow they have the magic pussy to tame the player.”

I laugh at her way of putting it, covering my mouth to stop the snort that’s about to escape. “Magic pussy. I haven’t heard that one before.”

She shrugs with a smirk. “Newsflash. They don’t, and they end up with a broken heart on the next train out of town. I lose a good staff member and friend, then have to start all over again.”

“Is he really that bad?” I whisper, my eyes landing back on him. The blonde with the bouncy curls next to him stares at him like she’s in love, laughing animatedly.

Xavier leans in closer, her voice hushed. “Honey, you have no idea. I love the guy, he’s one of my best friends in the world. But you’ve never met a character like Kobe Rivera before.”

“You have nothing to worry about, Xavier. I have no intention of going there.” My face contorts with disgust as her words shatter the fleeting fantasy I’d been crafting. She’s right, he’snot to be messed with. I’ve got my agenda, a foothold in this place, and I’m determined to hold on to this job for as long as it takes to bring him down. The thought of where he’s been is also disturbing, not to mention he’s a criminal. He’s the type of guy I became a police officer to lock up so I can make this world a better place. My pussy has no place daydreaming about how satisfying his cock would be in breaking my man drought.

“Xav, we’re getting too busy on the floor. Can your new girl help?” asks one of the other elite girls.

“Bella, this is Shelby, she’ll take you through table service.”

I smile toward the busty redhead. I’m sure she’s popular with the guys in here. Her tits look like they’re about to explode out of her tight uniform at any second. She grabs my hand, dragging me over to a loaded tray of drinks.

“Nothing to learn. Take this and head for table eight. Don’t spill anything,” she explains, sounding rushed.

I nod, taking the tray full of drinks.Don’t spill anything. I’m already having enough trouble in these ridiculously high heels. Walking through the busy room with a tray full of drinks is going to be extra fun. All I can say is whoever selected this uniform has a penis. I glance back at her, unsure.

“Go on.” She encourages me with a wave of her hand.

Balancing the tray with one hand while steadying myself with the other, I scan the room for table eight. Luckily, it’s not far away. I carefully navigate my way to a table occupied by a group of well-dressed guys. Offering a warm smile as I approach, one of them courteously moves aside to make room for the tray.

“Your round of beers,” I announce, and they dig in, each grabbing a drink.

One man leans in. “You’re new here?” he asks in a friendly tone.

I nod, still smiling, “Sure am. This is my first shift.”

“What’s your name?” he asks, like my name is important. He scans my face, making me feel uneasy.
