I fumbled with my dick, trying to tuck it back into my jeans and zip up before whoever was behind me walked up and caught what I was doing. I’d just barely made it when there was a light rapping on my window.
Looking at the officer, I closed my eyes.
Thank God it wasn’t the sheriff.
“Hey, Gunner. Everything ok?”
Deputy Beckett Reed stood outside my truck with a flashlight shining down on the seat next to me.
“Everything’s good, Deputy. Just pulled over to answer the phone.”
He again looked past me into my truck.
What the fuck was he looking for?
“There a problem?”
“Nope, just saw the truck sitting here idling, wanted to make sure everything was ok.”
He looked past me a third time.
This son of a bitch was hoping to find something. “You should probably get going. Wouldn’t want to get a call about a suspicious truck sitting here for too long.”
“Just waiting for a call back. Then I’ll be on my way.”
“Ok.” He flashed his light over to the passenger side a fourth fucking time, and my patience started to grow thin.
He needed to get in his car and fucking leave. “Have a good night.”
“You too, Deputy.”
I watched through my side mirror as he walked back to his car. He sat for a minute, and I saw him talking on his radio.
I hit the call button on my phone and brought it up to my ear.
“Yo, Gunner. What’s up?”
“What the fuck do we know about Deputy Reed?”
“Why?”
He finally pulled away, and I waved as he drove by, making sure he saw the phone pressed to the side of my head.
“He just pulled up behind me while I was stopped on a side street, and he was acting cagey. Kept flashing his light all over my truck like he expected to find something.”
“Why are you sitting on a side street?”
“Never fucking mind! What do we know?”
“Just the basics. Dec had me run a check before he hired him, but nothing flagged.”
“Dig deeper. I want everything you can find.”
“Where are you, Gunner?”
“Nav, so help me, if you are tracking my phone...”
“King told you to stop following the shrink.” I heard the condemnation in his voice. He didn’t get it, though. I couldn’t stop. I had to know she was safely in her bed at night or I couldn’t sleep.
