“That’s the price, Lorelei. A stubborn little harpy once told me ‘everything has a price.’”
“Fine. I don’t care.”So long as my butt is covered.“Tell them your sordid fantasies. I don’t care. Just don’t expect me to say you lasted more than thirty seconds.”
“Camille will care if it gets out.” Naeve shoots a look at Farrell before dusting herself down. “C’mon, I’m starving, let’s go grab dinner.”
Camille . . . I need to ask Naeve about that. Are they a thing? Forcing a smile to my face, I walk toward the door. It shouldn’t bother me if they’re a thing. If he wants to waste his time on that bitch. It’s his loss.
And this is good. This banter between us, heading for meals together. It’s how it should be. So why do I feel like an asshole?
“Wait. Guys, I . . . I’m not being entirely truthful.”
“Knew it!” Zephyr exclaims.
“It’s Linx . . .”
Naeve whirls around, her hand to her mouth.
“Ididn’tkill him.” Biting my lip, I force myself to go on. “But Seth did, and I was there.”
By the time they’ve stopped talking over each other and I’ve explained what happened, I’m fucking exhausted.
I left bits out. I glossed over how Seth killed Linx. No one needs to know just how little consideration Seth gave to our options. Something in me still wants to protect my brother from their judgment. Andno oneneeds to know I kissed Chano. Although, I can tell they’re surprised we worked together.
“Did you know?” Naeve turns to Farrell, accusation in her eyes. “Did you know about that file, about your father having Lorelei sent here?”
“No,” he says carefully. “My father doesn’t tell me everything. Now Lorelei is part of my allegiance, his plans might have changed.”
“Don’t count on it.” With a flat look at Farrell, Zephyr says, “We’ll find out what that asshole is up to, Lorelei. We’ll find out why Seth is working with him.”
The harsh overhead light hurts my eyes, and the hard plastic chair is bloody uncomfortable. It’s as if I’m already on trial.
“I will repeat the question, Miss Smith,” the PIG agent focuses on the papers in front of her. “Where were you and who were you with on the night Linx was murdered?”
“Farrell Cuelebre.”
The agent standing by the door pushes himself upright and stalks toward me, leaning down into my face.
“So why did Chano Maverik say you were with him? Which one was it? Or was it neither? Didyoukill Linx?”
Swallowing hard, I clasp my hands together to stop them from shaking. I can’t land either of the guys in it.Shit.
With a deep breath, I look up at the male officer and flutter my eyelashes. “Uh. I . . . well, you see. We . . . all of us . . . together . . . I . . .” I lick my lips. “I have a big appetite you see, sir. A big sexual appetite. One of them just isn’t enough.” I play with the edge of my skirt, hitching it up and flashing more skin than necessary.
The guy’s eyes travel down my body. I swear he’s taking my damn uniform off in his head. The other agent coughs.
“Miss Smith! We are the Paranormal Investigations Group. Believe it or not we have seen polyamorous relationships before. I assume Naeve Haliai joined you. She also stated she spent part of the evening in your presence.”
Straining to keep my face straight, I give her the smallest of nods.
“You and your lovers are wasting precious PIG time by leaving information out of your statements.”
I drop my eyes to the table, trying to hide my smirk. “Sorry, ma’am. The Maveriks and the Cuelebres don’t get on. It wouldn’t look good for them to be seen . . . together.”
She sighs, rolling her eyes. “Fine. Get out of here.”
Standing slowly, I drop a wink at the male agent before hightailing it out. Holy fucking fuck. That was way too close. Pausing, I send a quick message before this blows up in our faces.
