He picked up on the second ring. “Hello, who’s this?”

The sexy purr made my knees quiver. He’d sounded like that when he was thrusting inside me.

“Dante, it’s Luna.” I was proud of myself for sounding calm.

“Luna?” He sounded shocked. Loud music was playing in the background.

Just as I opened my mouth to remind him who I was, he chuckled. “Couldn’t get enough, huh? Want one more fling?”

I shivered, his voice wrapping around me like taffy. “Well…uhh, I have to talk to you.”

“We’re talking, love.” He must have moved because the vibrating music in the background faded. “Are you in town?”

“I’m at home, in California,” I added lamely. “But uhh, listen. I’m pregnant.”

“What?”

“Pregnant.” I let out a breath. “About two months—”

“Impossible.” His tone got sharp in an instant. “You weren’t in heat.”

“It’s rare but—”

“Stop.” He snapped. “If you wanted money, you could have just asked. You don’t have to play with me like this. Omegas are all the same, aren’t they?”

I sucked in a breath like he’s slapped me. I’d expected disbelief, or some measure of disinterest, but not anger.

“I didn’t…” I started, horrified to feel tears stinging the corners of my eyes. “You don’t have todoanything, I just thought you’d want to know.”

“Know about my totally impossible love child so you can have child support?” Dante scoffed. “Right.”

Halos snatched the phone from me. I was glad, because I was so shocked, I couldn’t think about what to say or do next.

“Listen, asshole,” Halos started, his voice sharper than I’d ever heard it. “She’s done her duty and let you know.”

Faintly, I heard Dante’s amused voice say, “What are you, the sperm donor? Nice scheme you got going.”

Halos ignored him. “Now that she’s let you know you have a child, we won’t be contacting you. Ever again.”

My throat closed up, and I stifled a whimper. That seemed so final, but Halos was right. I did what I was supposed to, and if Dante thought I was some scheming harpy, he could go pound sand.

“We don’t need or want anything from you. Have a nice life.” Halos hung up the phone.

He held me against him, and I realized I was shaking. A purr rumbled from his chest, and I rubbed my cheek against him.

“It’s silly to be sad.” I whispered. “He thinks I’m out for money, and if he’s that much of an idiot, I don’t need him.”

Halos rubbed his hands along my back. “It’s normal to want him around. You had a connection and now he’s gone and acted like a jerk.”

His words soothed me. I closed my eyes and let his rumbly purr ease some of the worst nerves.

“It’s okay, Luna. It’s alright. You’re not alone.”

“If Colton and Quinn are coming tomorrow, I need to tell my family tonight.” I looked around my cottage. It was a little bit messy, with books and blankets randomly laying around. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d swept and mopped the floors either. Or vacuumed. “And clean the cottage.”

“The cottage is fine.” He kissed my forehead. “And you can tell your family when you’re ready.”

“It’s got to be tonight.” I sighed. “Would you feel bad if I asked you to stay here?”
