"Valens isn't an alpha."

I rolled my eyes. "So everyone says. Who needs alphas anyway?"

"You do." Kivai said, his tone amused. "You know how nice it was to have a break from all that magic pushing at you?"

"Yes," I said. I figured where Kivai was going with this, but I didn't want him to be right. "But there's more to life than just a bond."

"There is," he said, moving his hand over my throat. It was strangely erotic, and I squirmed. "Many more things, but I'm concerned about your wellbeing first and foremost."

Energy shifted with his hand, like he was a magnet. It moved over my skin, and sank inside.

I took a small sip of air. "I tried galas, and none of those alphas even gave me the time of day. I'm not getting stuck with some jerk for the rest of my life just because I need his—his bond." I almost slipped and said dick.

Kivai smirked, like he knew what I was going to say. " They're looking for an omega to bond. Hold it against them, but find someone else."

I grumbled, which turned into a gasp as he moved his hand over my chest. He was inches away from touching anything good. I shifted my weight, pressing my legs together. Desire pulsed from my clit, burrowing into my core, and then radiating up the rest of my body.

"I'll help you," Kivai said, his voice turning silky. "Show me an alpha you think might be worthy, and I'll read his energy for you."

"Deal," I said, my breath coming in faster.

He moved his hand over my stomach, and I arched up with a gasp. Energy crawled over me, inside me, deeper than I'd ever felt. It was like my own energy, but different, like night and day. I dug my fingers into the sheets, dropping all pretense I wasn't about to start begging him to climb on top of me.

He held his hand over my stomach longer than the other places, watching me. "You're not going to like the next one. Or rather, you'll love it."

"Please," I whispered. Sweat beaded my body. I didn't know what I was begging for, only that I needed him.

"The good news," Kivai said, his voice husky. "I figured out part of what it making it so hard for you to control your magic."

"Excellent," I panted and grabbed his arm. "And the cure is your dick."

"Zara," he panted. "We can't. To say that I have nothing to offer you is an understatement." His face was lined with regret, and heat. "You're slipping in and out of the spirit world. I could hurt you."

"I don't care," I looked at him. "I'm not asking for an eternity. Just tonight."

Kivai sucked in a breath. "I don't deserve you. I'm taking advantage of you while you're—"

I linked my hand in his and looked up at him. "Completely in my right mind. Some of my lust faded with concern for him, but mostly I just wanted to tell him I didn't care if it killed me, it would be a good death.

"Yes." He frowned. "I didn't know you were so...amorous for me, or I wouldn't have..."

I blushed from head to toe. "You don't want to...I get it—"

"No." Kivai shook his head quickly. "I want you more than I can stand. But..." He put his hand on my thigh.

I felt his weight, but it was a soft presence. I shifted my leg open anyway, my body responding out of need.

"Sweet spirits," Kivai said, shuddering. "You're so gorgeous."

"I need you. I’m willing to risk death."

Kivai leaned forward but kissed my forehead. "I'm not. Not until I'm sure." He stood up, and I almost cried.

"I'm not going to leave you wanting," Kivai said. "Where are your sex toys?"

"Oh." My skin flushed. "Oh. Yes. Under the bed."

I sat up on my hip. Kivai knelt down and pulled a box out from under the bed. Inside was an assortment of dildos, butt plugs, and other things I didn't have a name for.
