Right. I touched my temples. "I think I'm getting a migraine." I smiled at Branson, who barely glanced at me. "It was so nice to have company, but I think I need to lay down."

Valens stood up, and led me away from the table. The soldier's pity rose into the air like a small cloud. They thought I was faking it for attention, unable to handle my sister in the spotlight.

I covered my mouth, trying to keep the giggle inside.

Valens led me upstairs, and closed the door to a bedroom behind us. I started snickering. "They think I'm faking for attention."

He nodded, still looking worried. "Your color is off."

I fanned myself. "I'm hot."

The bedroom was nice, with it's own bathing chamber and a little window seat.

"A bath," Valens said like it was the answer to all problems. "It will help."

I sat on a wicker chair and watched Valens work the levers.

I should ask him to join me in the tub. His arms flexed as he poured soaps and oils into the water. Lavender filled the air, and I sighed.

"I want to know things."

He glanced up.

"Why are they so suspicious?"

"They're alphas. I don't quite read like a beta, and we have an omega with us."

"Okay."

"And they're soldiers. They think they own the world."

He said the last with a grunt.

I had other questions, but my head was fuzzy. The bath ready, Valens left and I undressed.

Warm water seeped into my body. I dragged myself out when my skin shriveled. It was only early evening but I was ready to go to sleep.

I pulled on a loose nightgown. My hair was a tangled mess, and refused to submit to my attempts at brushing.

Valens was sitting in a chair waiting for me when I came out of the bathing room.

I sucked in a breath, not ready for the sight of him sitting in a chair. His shoulders were so broad, the chair looked dainty in comparison. "I brought you food."

I sank down onto the side of the bed, brush in my hands. My arms were so heavy. "Nova okay?"

Valens gave me a faint smile. "Nova and Hashir are working the soldiers over like pros. Names, regiment numbers. We'll find out if there's something suspicious."

"Good."

Valens watched me. "What's wrong?"

"Everything is thick and heavy." Even my tongue. Talking seemed like too much work. I lifted my brush. "Can you please..."

He stood up and sat next to me on the bed. He sectioned my hair off and gently brushed my hair.

I sighed, the gentle tickle on my scalp bliss. "Thank you."

"Of course." His energy soothed me. He brushed my hair out until it was untangled.
