Jace thrust against him, sweat making their bodies slick and Smoke thought, mine too. He knew it when Jace’s orgasm reached it’s peak, setting them off in a chain reaction as he came, and Mia came around him.

For a moment they leaned against each other, gasping for breath.

They were together. It was just up to him keep it that way.

Jace curled around Mia, Smoke pressed against his back. It was morning, and his body ached in very pleasant ways.

It had been ten months since he’d felt this much joy.

They’d left the warehouse and came back to Mia’s apartment, where they proceeded to have more amazing sex.

Tikka was sleeping on Mia’s shoulder, with her butt facing Jace. He was sure that wasn’t accidental on the familiar’s part.

He sighed. Smoke saved the night with his orders, but it would be time soon to talk, and he wasn’t sure what to say.

He couldn’t give them up again, and judging by how upset Mia had been, and determined Smoke looked, they felt the same.

Jace slid out of bed. He could start breakfast at least.

His mother had called last night, but he texted her he was busy with business and left it at that.

She was not going to like being ignored.

The hell of it was, Mia was right. He didn’t have the control he wanted in the clan. He kept telling himself he could bide his time, that was how things were done.

But if he lost Mia and Smoke again in the process then what was the damn point?

Part of him burned at the thought of leaving the clan. There was no love lost between him and his family, but he wanted to shove it in their face they were wrong about him. He was strong. Stronger than Dax and with time, strong enough to lead the entire damn clan.

He grabbed some bacon out of the fridge. Mia did a lot of magic last night and then they didn’t let her rest.

He grinned. No, they didn’t let her rest one bit.

Mia shuffled into the kitchen, her hair rumpled. “Smoke’s out like a light.”

Jace handed her a cup of coffee. “He’s probably been burning the candle at both ends.”

Jace frowned. Four warehouses for clanless dragons? That was a much bigger operation than he thought Smoke was running.

He would have to make sure the clans were distracted.

Mia slurped down her coffee, watching him crack eggs and mix up some quick fillings for an omelet. He looked at her out of the side of his eyes, but she wasn’t anxiously watching him. She was still sleepy, and probably trying to wake up. She hopped onto the countertop, the oversized shirt she was wearing riding up higher.

His cock twitched. No, she was probably sore.

“You sleep okay?” He brushed a kiss over her mouth, and she tilted her head up to him like a flower leaning to the sun.

Bright hope kindled inside. She cared for him, for both of them.

“I did.” She drank the rest of her coffee, and Jace poured her another cup. She brushed her hand over his arm. “Selene texted, she’s going to Sawyer's ranch.”

Jace nodded. “She’ll be okay.”

She was very close to molting, and he hoped Selene had enough of a connection with those dragons to make a difference.

“You’re frowning.”

“Selene was really close to molting.” He flipped the omelet. “I was just thinking too close.”
