“I was thinking,” I said, “that if you’re up for it, we could spend the day indulging in the luxury of the city.”
Kai’s chuckle vibrated against me. “I can’t even begin to figure out what you mean by that.”
“Then I guess you’ll have to trust me to show you a good time. Can you do that?”
He grinned. “If it’s with you, definitely.”
BY “LUXURY OF the city,” I meant pampering to the extreme. After starting things off with a Michelin-starred breakfast, I took Kai to the grandest hotel in Monaco, where we indulged in twenty-four-karat facials and Ayurvedic treatments that included warm herbal oil to clear the chakras—something I’d discovered on a trip to the Himalayas once—before rounding things off with four-handed massages and a bath soak.
Was it over the top? Abso-fucking-lutely. But he already knew that about me, so why expect anything less at this point?
Thoroughly relaxed and reenergized—jet lag, begone—we headed to the Promenade for lunch and shopping. The first stop was for something I should’ve done back in Manhattan, which was getting Kai a cell phone. It was the first time he put up any kind of disagreement, saying he didn’t need one, but when Imentioned it would be easier, and safer, if we could have contact no matter where we were, he reluctantly agreed.
“Are you tired yet, or ready for more?” I asked as we stepped out onto the packed Promenade.
“Not tired,” he said, shaking his head. “What would you like to do?”
I gave him a mischievous smile and winked before heading to just the spot. There’d been no need to call ahead, not when I was one of their elite clients. I’d barely touched the buzzer before we were ushered inside one of the most prestigious designer shops on this side of the Atlantic. I glanced at Kai as we were led past elaborate displays of the latest designs, straight off the runway, and watched his face light up as he took it all in.
Even as I wanted to share my world with him, I couldn’t help but hope this wasn’t too much. I kept careful watch with every place we entered, making sure he was never uncomfortable. Wanting to spoil him was just as much for me as it was for him, and I had a feeling he understood that, and that was why he continued to humor me.
I also hoped it was because he was enjoying himself.
Kai stopped in front of a mannequin on a pedestal dressed in a black one-piece suit with the shirt cut down past the chest. He reached out to finger the fabric but pulled his hand back.
“You would look amazing in this,” he said.
The fact that he pictured me and didn’t want it for himself was a hot surprise, one I was more than willing to accommodate.
“Oh yeah? Should I get it?”
“Well…” He looked back at me with one side of his lips kicked up. “Maybe you should try it on first.”
“I see,” I said, strolling toward him. “If you want a show, Kai, all you have to do is say so. I’m happy to oblige.”
The look he gave me from under his lashes wasn’t shy but teasing. “I mean, I wouldn’t say no. It’s a hot outfit.”
I laughed as I gestured for our escort to come back and put the clothes in a private dressing area. “It’s the outfit that’s hot, is it? Guess we’ll have to see about that. Is there anything else you want to see?”
Kai’s eyes twinkled and then he took off, exploring every corner of the shop and choosing different outfits for me.
“And to think I brought you here soyoucould choose for yourself,” I said. “Since you’ve been stuck with clothes I’ve chosen for you.”
“But I love what you’ve chosen.” He rubbed the sleeve of his shirt like he enjoyed the feel of it against his skin.
“I’m happy to hear it. I’d enjoy seeing what you would choose for yourself too. No pressure.”
To my utter delight, he found several options for himself to go along with the massive amount he’d picked out for me. Several racks filled the private dressing room, along with mirrors to show off every angle. No harsh fluorescents here, only lighting made to enhance.
A plush cream armchair with a gold brocade design sat off to the side for viewing. Kai lingered in the entryway, and I gestured to the chair.
“Your seat, sir.”
He chuckled, and as he sat down, his feet dangled slightly off the ground.
What a cute little king he makes.
“You requested a show, I believe?” I said.
